Team-ups are a long-standing tradition in comic books, and DC Comics is known for some truly memorable ones. Batman, one of DC’s most popular heroes, has surprisingly collaborated with a wide variety of characters – from Scooby-Doo and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to other famous detectives.
Batman first became popular in comic books, but his animated shows have been fantastic too. One show, Batman: The Brave & The Bold, frequently featured team-ups with other heroes. In a particularly memorable Halloween episode, Batman traveled through time and teamed up with the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous character appeared within the DC universe, and this episode is truly something special to watch.
Batman and Sherlock Holmes Combined Their Detective Skills
The 2009 animated series Batman: The Brave & The Bold featured a particularly chilling episode called ‘Trials of the Demon!’ The story centers around Jason Blood, a scholar of the occult, who is wrongly accused of a crime. To clear his name, he magically summons Batman to 19th-century London, hoping the Dark Knight can uncover the true criminal.
When Batman travels back in time to Victorian London, he teams up with the famous detective Sherlock Holmes and his partner, Dr. Watson. Both detectives are at the peak of their skills, and it’s fascinating to watch them collaborate and solve the case. Batman is known as one of the world’s best detectives, so it’s unusual to see him challenged, but Holmes proves to be a worthy opponent, even occasionally outsmarting the Dark Knight.
It’s no surprise that Holmes quickly deduces Batman’s secret identity, accurately piecing together his entire history – he only misguesses the name. Batman, however, is equally well-informed about Holmes, having done thorough research beforehand. They make a fantastic duo, and it’s a real treat to see the writers of Batman: The Brave & The Bold craft such clever and engaging conversations between these two brilliant minds.
This episode features both brilliant detective work and a genuinely creepy atmosphere, making it ideal for Halloween. While Batman and Sherlock Holmes initially solve the case using traditional methods, they soon discover the real villain is a supernatural being who’s stealing souls and manipulating evidence to cover his tracks.
This episode is full of fun appearances from other DC heroes and villains. You’ll see both spooky characters like Scarecrow and Scream Queen, and classic figures like the original Flash, Jay Garrick. It’s a really enjoyable watch from beginning to end, and fans of Batman or Sherlock Holmes won’t want to miss it.
Batman & Sherlock Holmes Have Worked Together Before
Because the classic Sherlock Holmes stories are no longer under copyright, anyone can use Holmes, Watson, Moriarty, and other characters in their own stories. Both DC and Marvel have done this, and fans often enjoy seeing Holmes work with other detectives.
Although their recent TV appearance marked the first meeting within the Brave and the Bold world, Batman and Sherlock Holmes actually teamed up much earlier – in 1987. Holmes appeared in issue #572 of Detective Comics, where Batman and Robin travel to London while investigating a case and encounter an aging Sherlock Holmes.
The comic features Sherlock Holmes as a genuine detective who influenced Batman’s development as an investigator. This Holmes is over a century old, and Batman is surprised to find him still living. Holmes explains that he intentionally called for Batman’s help and quickly figured out who he was.
Batman’s creation drew inspiration from characters like Sherlock Holmes, classic pulp heroes such as The Shadow, and historical figures like Robert the Bruce. Considering this, it’s natural to enjoy seeing Batman and Holmes team up, and it’s particularly fun in a mysterious, atmospheric story like this.
