The new anime film, The Movie: Reze Arc, has just been released in North America and is receiving rave reviews. Ryan Colt Levy, known for voicing Denji in Chainsaw Man and Eunseok in Solo Leveling, recently talked about the roles that have been important to his career, and shared which anime he thinks doesn’t get enough attention.

Solo Leveling Star Names Moriarty the Patriot an Underwatched Sherlock Holmes Anime

I’ve been noticing how popular voice actor Caleb Levy has become lately, especially after voicing Denji in Chainsaw Man and Rody Soul in My Hero Academia. But he’s actually been working in anime for a while now – one of his earlier big roles was as John Watson in Moriarty the Patriot. When I asked him about his favorite roles, he didn’t hesitate. He said Chainsaw Man really stands out, but he also genuinely enjoyed working on both My Hero Academia and Moriarty the Patriot, which he feels doesn’t get the attention it deserves as a Sherlock Holmes anime.

The anime series Moriarty the Patriot, created by the renowned studio Production I.G (known for shows like Ghost in the Shell, Psycho-Pass, and Haikyu!!), ran from October 2020 to June 2021. It offers a fresh take on the famous Sherlock Holmes stories, portraying the villainous Moriarty as a complex, sympathetic character. Actor Levy expressed his excitement about landing the role of John Watson, noting it was an opportunity he wouldn’t have otherwise had.

Sherlock Holmes has profoundly influenced the mystery genre, appearing in many forms of media, including anime. John Watson is a key character in all versions of the story, often acting as the voice of reason for Sherlock. In live-action adaptations, several actors—including Lucy Liu, Martin Freeman, and Jude Law—have portrayed Watson or variations of the character.

While Moriarty the Patriot didn’t become a huge mainstream hit, those who watched it generally loved it, especially the animation and how the characters were developed. On the anime database MyAnimeList, it has a score of 8.17 based on around 200,000 ratings. To put that in perspective, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has a 9.29 rating from almost 750,000 voters, and Fullmetal Alchemist scores an 8.11 with over 900,000. Voice actor Kenjiro Tsuda says he wasn’t well-known before landing the role of Denji in Chainsaw Man, but he clearly cherishes his portrayal of John Watson, and Moriarty the Patriot remains a significant work for him.
