‘Chainsaw Man’ takes weekend box office; Springsteen biopic disappoints

The new anime film, “Chainsaw Man — The Movie: Reze Arc,” debuted at number one in U.S. theaters this weekend, earning an estimated $17.25 million, as reported by Comscore. The film is a collaboration between Crunchyroll and Sony.

This R-rated movie is based on a popular manga and tells the story of Denji, a teenage demon hunter. After being betrayed and killed by the yakuza while trying to pay off his parents’ debts, his loyal dog, Pochita, makes a deal to save him. Pochita sacrifices himself, merging with Denji and giving him the power to turn parts of his body into chainsaws.

As a huge anime fan, I wasn’t surprised to see “Chainsaw Man” doing so well worldwide. But I was really shocked to hear how poorly the Bruce Springsteen biopic, with Jeremy Allen White, did in comparison. It only made around $9.1 million and landed in fourth place – definitely a disappointing result for a movie like that!

The film, adapted from Warren Zanes’ 2023 book, explores Bruce Springsteen’s life and work by focusing on the creation of his 1982 album, “Nebraska.”

According to The Times, the movie starts strong as an insightful look into creativity, but it loses momentum towards the end. It drifts into a sad portrayal of Springsteen’s life and doesn’t recover, ultimately feeling directionless.

The horror sequel “Black Phone 2” dropped to second place in its second weekend, bringing in around $13 million. So far, the movie has earned a total of $49.1 million domestically for Universal and Blumhouse.

Coming in third place is the new romance film “Regretting You” from Paramount, based on a novel by Colleen Hoover, the author of “It Ends With Us.” The movie, which stars Allison Williams and Dave Franco, earned an estimated $12.5 million in its opening weekend in the United States.
