Okay, let’s talk about last week’s Survivor. The episode really focused on Shannon and whether she was playing too aggressively. We saw a ton of footage of her running around, chatting strategy with everyone on her tribe – seriously, everyone – and even trying to make deals with Steven practically as soon as he opened his eyes. The editing definitely painted her as making a big strategic mistake by being so eager. But, interestingly, Jeff Probst came to her defense on his podcast, arguing that players these days should be playing harder, which was a bit of a surprise!
Jeff Probst explained that while strategic timing and understanding the social dynamics are still important, the current format of Survivor pushes players to act faster. Starting with three tribes, a shorter game length, and numerous advantages and challenges have created a quicker pace, which is why players don’t strategize the same way they used to. He shared this insight during a recent episode of his show, On Fire.
As a huge Survivor fan, I felt like Season 41 really marked the start of something new. It’s still the same basic game we all love, but the way people were playing felt completely different – much faster paced and more intense. It felt like everyone knew they had to hit the ground running. Starting with just six people on a tribe immediately put everyone in a desperate situation – you were practically fighting for your life from day one!
Probst explained that he was particularly excited for Survivor 50 casting to see how the original players would interact with those from the newer seasons. He questioned whether the veterans would try to dominate and control the game, or if the season would resemble the faster-paced, more strategic style of recent Survivor seasons.
I recently chatted with Jeremy Collins, a past winner and frequent player of Survivor, though he’s sitting out Season 50. He believes the ‘New Era’ of the game demands a different strategy, and that the returning veterans especially need to adjust. He feels like the game has fundamentally shifted, and they can’t rely on old tactics. Here’s what he had to say…
I need to adjust my approach and play more aggressively. I’ll be switching things up and taking a more assertive style of play.
The upcoming season of Survivor, season 50, is expected to move very quickly. With 24 players and a short timeframe of 26 days, the initial tribes of eight will likely face frequent double-elimination episodes before the merge. This means players will need to be aggressive and make quick moves from the very beginning, as they’ll have no time to waste.
One major change in the newer seasons of Survivor is that players are much less likely to simply vote with the majority. While blindsides and unexpected votes have always happened, in older seasons, players often just voted out the person with the fewest allies. This still occurs sometimes before the merge, but now, with the show casting more dedicated fans, players are much more eager to make bold moves and build a strong track record to impress the jury and increase their chances of winning.
I’m really interested to see how players approach alliances in Survivor 50. Will they form strong, lasting bonds like in past seasons, or will we see a lot of quick betrayals and unexpected votes? I think it depends more on the players themselves than any changes to the game’s rules.
Last season, Joe was a strong competitor who consistently won challenges and successfully brought a close ally to the final tribal council. However, he wasn’t seen as a major strategic player, despite quietly controlling a lot of the game. A traditional Survivor jury, similar to what we might see in season 50, probably would have appreciated his subtle control and given him more credit for it.
I’m really looking forward to the premiere of Survivor 50 this spring! In the meantime, you can watch Survivor 49 on CBS Wednesdays, and it’s sure to be full of the unpredictable and competitive gameplay Jeff and Jeremy have been describing.
