Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was a key film in launching the DC Extended Universe, and it set the stage for the Justice League movie. Ben Affleck was selected to play Batman in this new film series.
Even though the DC movie series concluded in 2023 with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, director Zack Snyder recently shared a previously unseen photo on Instagram. The image shows Ben Affleck in his initial Batman costume test for the 2016 film. Snyder captioned the black-and-white Polaroid, “First time in the suit. Everything I hoped it would be. #Batman.”
This news follows a recent post by Snyder showing a new image of Henry Cavill as Superman, dated October 17, 2025. Ben Affleck previously played the character in Suicide Squad, the 2017 Justice League film, and even filmed additional scenes for Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which was released on HBO Max in 2021.
Ben Affleck concluded his time playing Batman with a cameo in the 2023 film The Flash, marking his last appearance in the suit. He had originally planned to star in, direct, and write a solo Batman movie, but the project was reimagined as a reboot starring Robert Pattinson, directed by Matt Reeves.

DC Studios is planning a fresh take on Batman as part of a larger, connected DC Universe. Director Andy Muschietti is heading the project, which is currently in development and doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet.
We’ve already seen the DC Universe’s version of Batman appear briefly in the animated series Creature Commandos through a flashback, and in a vision of the future shown by the character Circe. A Clayface movie is planned as part of James Gunn’s DC franchise, and the film, scheduled for release on September 11, 2026, will reveal more about Batman’s city, Gotham.
Although The Brave and The Bold is in development, it won’t be the only Batman project we see soon. Matt Reeves is also confirmed to direct The Batman – Part II, currently planned for release on October 1, 2027. Filming will begin in 2026, and Robert Pattinson will return as Batman.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is available through home media release and on streaming.
