Ethan Hawke solidified his reputation as a top Hollywood actor with his role in the 2021 horror film, The Black Phone. He gave a chilling performance as ‘The Grabber,’ a cruel serial killer preying on children in 1970s Colorado. The film also stars Mason Thames, known from How to Train Your Dragon, as a kidnapped teenager who discovers a strange black phone that allows him to communicate with the Grabber’s previous victims.
The original horror film, based on Joe Hill’s short story, was a major success, earning $161.4 million globally and receiving good reviews. This led to a sequel, Black Phone 2, scheduled for release in 2025. Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, and Jeremy Davies all returned for the new film, which, like the first, is scaring audiences worldwide. Released during the spooky season, fans are eager to know when Black Phone 2 will be available to stream.

As a huge horror fan, I’m always excited to see what Blumhouse Productions comes up with! They’re the team behind some really popular movies like Paranormal Activity, M3GAN, and Five Nights at Freddy’s. And good news for us – their upcoming films like Wolf Man, The Woman in the Yard, and Drop, Black Phone 2 are all being distributed by Universal. That means after they hit theaters, they’ll first stream on Peacock for four months. Then, they’ll be exclusive to Prime Video for ten months, before coming back to Peacock for another four months. Finally, they’ll become available on other streaming services too, which is awesome!
What Can Fans Expect From ‘Black Phone 2’?

Universal Pictures
Ethan Hawke is reprising his terrifying role as the Grabber in Black Phone 2. The movie takes place four years after the first film, in 1982, and follows Finney Black (Mason Thames) as he tries to rebuild his life after being held captive by the psychotic serial killer. But the Grabber isn’t gone for good—he’s back to cause more terror, this time targeting Finney’s younger sister, Gwen (Madeleine McGraw). Gwen starts having unsettling visions of the boys who were murdered at Alpine Lake winter camp. Finney and Gwen will have to team up to finally stop the ruthless killer.
After the huge success of the 2021 film The Black Phone, director Scott Derrickson and author Joe Hill teamed up to create a sequel. Hill explained that the new movie drew heavily from the memorable images of the villain’s masks. Hill is accustomed to seeing his work adapted for the screen – his comic Locke & Key became a TV series, his novel NOS4A2 also became a TV show, and Horns was made into a movie. Black Phone 2 is now a hit in theaters, earning $32.5 million domestically and $48 million worldwide, exceeding its $30 million production cost.
Similar to the first film, Black Phone 2 has been well-received by critics. It currently holds a 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 85% score from audiences on the Popcornmeter. Many viewers enjoyed the sequel’s intense violence and its embrace of classic slasher horror. Ethan Hawke delivers another strong performance as the terrifying villain, the Grabber, haunting Finney and Gwen even after death and tormenting them in their dreams, leading to a climactic confrontation. The movie is filled with suspenseful moments, a creepy atmosphere, and a deliberately unsettling pace, as noted in a review by The Reader.
With its remote camp, intense blizzard, and a villain reminiscent of Freddy Krueger, this movie feels like a blend of ‘Friday the 13th,’ ‘The Shining,’ and ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors’ – and that’s actually a good thing.
