The Prison Break Spinoff Already Sounds Like It’ll Hook Me More Than The O.G. Series Ever Did

Many viewers consider Prison Break to be a standout TV show from the 2000s. The show began with a compelling premise: two brothers trying to escape from a seemingly inescapable prison. It was exciting and ticked all the right boxes. However, as the story became increasingly complicated, I personally lost interest in following Lincoln Burrows and Michael Scofield’s quest for freedom.

I’m really intrigued by a new spinoff series coming from Elgin James, one of the writers of Mayans M.C. From what I’ve heard about it, which will be available on Hulu, I think it might be even better than the original show. Here’s why…

Don’t Get Me Wrong, The O.G. Series Was Great

I really enjoyed the original Prison Break. It was groundbreaking for network TV and featured memorable characters – both heroes and villains, even if some of the villains didn’t always make sense! The core idea – a man deliberately getting himself imprisoned with his brother to save him from a wrongful conviction – is one of the best TV premises I’ve seen in years, and the first two seasons were fantastic. However, I lost interest after that and never felt motivated to finish the series or rewatch it from the beginning.

But The Spinoff, With Its Focus On A Prison Guard, Has Me Wondering Where This Could Go

Hulu has officially ordered a new Prison Break series, as reported by Deadline in October 2025. This installment will feature a fresh storyline within the same universe as the original. The plot centers around a soldier who becomes a corrections officer and takes a dangerous job at a prison to demonstrate her dedication to a loved one. It will be interesting to see how the story develops and where it leads.

Will the new show follow the same plot as the original, where Emily Browning’s character, Cassidy, tries to free someone she cares about from prison? Or will she be tricked into helping someone break out? Either way, I’m hooked, especially with the addition of talented actors like Drake Rodger, Lukas Gage, Donal Logue, Margo Martindale, and Ray McKinnon.

Also, I Cannot Wait To Watch A Prison Show Crafted By Elgin James

I’m really looking forward to the new Prison Break series because Elgin James is running the show. He wrote and directed the first episode, and I’m incredibly excited to see what he does with the rest of the season!

James brings a distinctive and powerful voice to everything he does, whether it’s his work on shows like Mayans M.C. and The Outlaws, or his influence on the Boston hardcore music scene in the 90s and early 2000s. His own life experiences, including time in prison and even performing medical procedures (documented in his 2004 film Boston Beatdown Vol. 2), give him a wealth of material to draw on for this new project.

As a big fan, I’m a little disappointed to hear that a new season of Prison Break isn’t likely to air in 2025 – it sounds like production hasn’t really started yet. Still, I’m incredibly excited to see what the creators have planned for the show whenever it does return – I’m really looking forward to it!
