Jimmy Kimmel Blasts “Lies” Behind Stephen Colbert ‘Late Show’ Cancellation

Jimmy Kimmel recently faced some challenges and criticism after remarks he made about Charlie Kirk were misinterpreted. His show was temporarily paused, but he has since returned. Prior to this, Kimmel had commented on the difficulties faced by another late-night show, Stephen Colbert‘s. In July, it was announced that Paramount/CBS would not be renewing Colbert’s contract and the show would end in May.

Jimmy Kimmel discussed the situation on the ‘Where Everybody Knows Your Name’ podcast, sharing his thoughts and directly addressing what he called false claims about why it was cancelled.

Look, I can’t say definitively what’s going on, but I’m telling you, some of the stuff being said about his financial losses just doesn’t add up. This claim about losing $40 million a year? Absolutely not. I’m familiar with how late-night TV finances work, and that number is completely unrealistic. It just doesn’t make any sense. When I hear such obvious falsehoods, it makes me believe there’s a whole lot more they’re not telling us. That’s my gut feeling, and I think it’s probably right.

Jimmy Kimmel’s Vocal Support for Stephen Colbert is Admirable

This isn’t the first time Jimmy Kimmel has questioned the reasons given for the cancellation of Stephen Colbert’s show. He previously discussed the situation with Variety, also talking about his own position in television. He specifically dismissed claims that the show was losing a significant amount of money, calling them illogical, and criticized the sources who reported those figures.

It’s strange how little the media understands its own operations. That reported information is highly unlikely to be true. In fact, that single detail tells you a lot. The claim that he’s suddenly losing $40 million a year is unbelievable. For the first ten years I hosted the show, they said we weren’t profitable, yet we had five times the viewership we have now. It’s hard to know what to believe. Ultimately, the fact that we continue to get paid is the most important thing.

It’s impressive that Jimmy Kimmel continues to speak out about the issues surrounding Stephen Colbert’s exit from late night, even while facing his own challenges keeping his show running. His understanding of the business side of television has offered a helpful new way to look at the situation with Paramount and Colbert. Now that his show is back, viewers can probably expect Kimmel to continue sharing his honest opinions.
