Hulu’s true crime series, Murdaugh: Death in the Family, is quickly becoming one of the best in the genre, largely because it treats the victims and their families with respect. Jason Clarke, who also stars in The Last Frontier and A House of Dynamite, plays Alex Murdaugh, the central figure in the case, but it’s Patricia Arquette’s portrayal of his wife, Maggie, that truly holds the story together.
As a true crime fan, I was immediately drawn into the story of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh, and this documentary really digs into the years Maggie spent living with abuse before those tragic murders. The creators, Michael D. Fuller and director Erin Lee Carr, wanted to go beyond the headlines and understand Maggie as a person, and they started their research with Mandy Matney’s incredible ‘Murdaugh Murders’ podcast – which is how I first learned about the case, too!
Liam Crowley from ScreenRant interviewed the cast and creators of the Hulu miniseries Murdaugh: Death in the Family to learn how the popular podcast was adapted for television. Producers Carr and Fuller highlighted a surprising detail – a single line on Wikipedia – that significantly influenced their storytelling. Actors Arquette and Clarke talked about their acting choices, while Matney and Brittany Snow (who played her on screen) described how they prepared for their roles by spending time together. Will Harrison also shared his thoughts on which parent the character Buster Murdaugh was closer to.
Wikipedia Made Death In The Family Creators Committed To Fleshing Out Maggie Murdaugh’s Story
ScreenRant asked what new perspectives this series brings to a story that’s been adapted many times before, noting the existing podcast and documentary versions. They wanted to know what makes this version unique.
Someone brought to my attention that Maggie Murdaugh is only mentioned in a single line on the Wikipedia page about the Murdaugh family – a page that’s been viewed hundreds of thousands of times. Everyone else connected to the case has their own dedicated section and links. That made us ask, when we started working on this project, what we knew about Maggie and Paul Murdaugh’s lives before they were tragically killed in June 2021.
The events have been reported, but the true story lies within the walls of that house. As a documentary filmmaker, I’m proud to say we explored what led to this tragedy, even though cameras couldn’t capture everything. We wanted to understand how so many terrible things came together to result in the family’s destruction, and to show both the darkness and the humanity of the situation.
As Erin pointed out at the beginning of the project, we needed to focus on the relationships between the characters. With a fantastic cast including Jason Clarke and Patricia Arquette as Alex and Maggie, our goal was to find an authentic and moving portrayal of the story’s emotional core.
I’m sitting here with a fantastic documentary filmmaker, and it’s made me realize that crime documentaries often focus solely on the crime itself, who committed it, and who was affected. While those stories can be compelling and important, we wanted to go deeper and explore the human story at the core of it all.
Both Jason and Patricia are well-known and respected actors, but Patricia’s performance in this role is particularly striking and different from her previous work.
Michael D. Fuller praised the actress as incredibly talented, noting her frequent portrayal of mothers adds depth to her performances. He also highlighted how she serves as the emotional center of the story, bringing a relatable and human quality to the narrative.
I’ve always admired Jason as an actor – he’s incredibly charismatic and brings a natural confidence to his roles. He was the perfect fit for us; there aren’t many actors who could truly capture the essence of the character Alex. Alex is a well-known figure, and it takes someone special to not just play the part, but become him. We were very lucky to have Jason take on this leading role.
We were incredibly relieved when Patricia agreed to join the project. Honestly, it felt like the show could finally happen! It’s rare for any show to get made – the odds are really low, especially for someone like me who hadn’t worked on a TV series before. We were so grateful that Patricia, an Oscar-winning actress who brings incredible depth to her roles, would take on the part. We needed someone with her talent to portray a character many people disliked or didn’t understand.
Patricia Arquette & Jason Clarke Explain How They Got Into The Minds Of The Murdaughs

ScreenRant commented that my portrayal in this story is frightening and completely different from how people normally see me. They asked about the importance of fully immersing myself in a character, especially when the person I become on screen is so unlike myself, Jason Clarke.
Jason Clarke finds something truly special in an actor’s ability to make their performance seem effortless. He admired Gary Oldman growing up because Oldman always appeared completely immersed in his roles, and you never sensed the effort or preparation behind them – he simply was the character.
It’s surprisingly liberating, but gaining forty pounds is really demanding. The process of both adding and losing weight is painful, but it allows you to transform into someone completely different. That’s the most appealing part of this job – the opportunity for imagination, fun, and almost stepping into another time. It’s what initially attracted me to this profession.
Patricia Arquette found it unsettling at times. While filming, she’d occasionally be struck by how much a fellow actor resembled and sounded just like someone else, creating a really eerie feeling.
Once rehearsals began, it became clear he was more than just handsome. He was a complex character – at times endearing, secretive, paternal, vulnerable, and always busy fixing or acquiring things, and constantly on the go.
I truly enjoy collaborating with Patricia. Working with her feels like being back in the theater – it’s creatively fulfilling, both in the scenes we perform and the overall project. It’s a liberating experience.
ScreenRant complimented Patricia, calling it one of her best performances, particularly praising her non-verbal acting. They asked if she receives specific instructions on how to express emotions without speaking, or if she relies on her own instincts and interpretation of the role.
I found the case incredibly interesting, especially watching his dishonesty. It struck me because most women who are murdered in the US are killed by someone they have a close relationship with, and I’m familiar with the patterns of troubled relationships – things like substance abuse or unhealthy reliance on each other.
I wanted to acknowledge women who are beginning to understand they’ve accepted unhealthy patterns in their relationships. They’re slowly seeing that they’ve been manipulated by someone deceitful, and are realizing they don’t truly know the person they’re with – what they’re capable of, or what their life together really is.
She was always there for everyone, prioritizing her roles as a wife and mother and focusing on being supportive. It wasn’t until later that she began to explore her own identity, separate from those responsibilities, and ask herself, ‘Who am I beyond all of this?’
Could TikTok Be The Next Creative Frontier After Podcasts?

ScreenRant: Can you each give me some insight into which parents Paul and Buster gravitate toward?
I think Buster is probably a bit too reliant on his mother, but I’m not entirely sure.
Johnny Berchtold believes Paul Murdaugh faced immense pressure simply by being the youngest in his family. He suggests that while Paul shares traits with other family members, he was also actively trying to break away from their established patterns in the show’s portrayal.
I think he definitely sees and wants that attention from his dad that he’s giving Buster.
Absolutely. It seems Buster receives a lot of positive attention from his mother throughout the show, but he’s really striving to impress his father. It’s a pretty classic family dynamic where a father’s approval feels especially important – almost like achieving something significant.
You know, as a huge movie and TV fan, I think it’s amazing how stories are evolving. ScreenRant asked me about this new series, and how it started as a podcast and gained traction on TikTok. It really got me thinking – can something that begins as short-form content on a platform like TikTok actually grow into a full-length movie or series? I honestly think the answer is yes, and this project feels like a great example of that happening.
As a true crime buff, I totally agree – there’s incredible storytelling potential everywhere. It’s been fascinating watching the ‘Murdaugh Murders’ podcast evolve into a full-blown eight-part series. Seeing that initial idea blossom into something so much larger is just amazing, really.
It’s a real gift to be able to switch between lighthearted fun on TikTok and a serious project like this one. That jump is incredible and makes for a thrilling watch!
Brittany Snow Was Invested In The Murdaugh Murders Podcast Before Booking The Show

ScreenRant asked Mandy about how she found out Hulu wanted to turn her podcast into a TV show.
I still can’t believe this is finally happening! It’s been a long journey. I first met the show’s creators, Michael D. Fuller and Erin Lee Carr, in 2021, and I was immediately impressed by how much they focused on the victims’ experiences. I quickly felt a connection with them and was able to trust them with my story, because they were the first people who wanted to tell it in a way that felt right to me. To be honest, a lot of others approached the story in a way that made me uncomfortable, but Erin and Michael were so sincere and handled it with real sensitivity.
At first, the project seemed unlikely to succeed – we were told it had only a small chance of being approved, but we decided to try anyway. Last year, we finally received the go-ahead, and I was completely surprised! Even more amazing, Patricia Arquette signed on to star. Each step forward felt unbelievable; I kept thinking, ‘This can’t be happening!’
For a while, I didn’t think I’d even be portrayed as a character, and I actually thought the show might combine my story with Liz’s. So when I learned Brittany was going to play me, I was completely shocked! I never would have imagined someone so talented and beautiful would want to take on the role – it’s a dream come true. Even now, I’m still amazed and can hardly believe it happened.
During an interview with ScreenRant, Brittany was asked how much of the podcast she listened to in preparation for her role, and whether she and her co-star had a meal together beforehand.
Brittany Snow explained there was a lot to consider when taking on the role. She’d already listened to the podcast, so she was already familiar with the character of Mandy.
It had been years, but when I found out I’d been cast as Mandy, I’m serious – I was completely immersed in her world. I listened to her podcast and her voice every single day, while getting ready in the morning, during my commute, and after work. Her voice was constantly in my head. I’d listened so much that it felt natural, like I didn’t even need to try to imitate her – I was just surrounded by Mandy’s presence.
It was amazing to finally spend the day together! We had lunch, grabbed drinks, and just enjoyed each other’s company. It’s rare to play a character who’s so fun to be around, both on and off screen, and it truly felt like a dream come true.
