If I think about DC cartoons from the early 2000s, I immediately picture shows like Batman Beyond and Justice League – those were huge! But there was another awesome series that came out in 2003, Teen Titans, and it wasn’t really connected to those other shows. Compared to the DCAU stuff, Teen Titans was usually a bit more lighthearted, with a lot of action and comedy that felt inspired by anime. While each season had a main story running through it, most episodes were just self-contained and super fun to watch.
The show Teen Titans was able to make its serious moments really hit hard, and the episode “Haunted” from Season 3 perfectly shows this. It has a 9.3/10 rating on IMDb, which is the highest score of any Teen Titans episode. Interestingly, this is even higher than any episode from the acclaimed DC Animated Universe, including ones that have won Emmys. So, what makes this darkest Teen Titans episode so memorable for viewers?
Slade Tormented Teen Titans’ Heroes From Beyond the Grave
The episode “Haunted” began late at night, with Robin carefully monitoring security cameras, looking for any problems. He couldn’t sleep, constantly thinking about his old enemy, Slade. Fans of the comics know Slade as the supervillain Deathstroke, but his name was considered too intense for Cartoon Network. Slade was the main villain for the first two seasons of Teen Titans and shared a strong personal rivalry with Robin. Although Slade appeared to have died in the Season 2 finale – caught in a volcanic eruption caused by Terra – Robin couldn’t accept that he was really gone.
Robin went to the basement of Titans Tower and found Slade’s broken, dusty mask. Cyborg, who came down after him, switched on the lights and pointed out that Slade was gone for good, reduced to nothing more than dust. Later, while battling Cinderblock, Robin became separated from the other Titans and spotted a shadowy figure in the woods. It turned out to be Slade himself, who revealed he’d planted three seismic generators around Jump City that would cause a massive earthquake if they weren’t deactivated quickly.
It was awful watching Robin go up against Slade – he just wasn’t strong enough! And then, just as the rest of the Titans showed up, Slade disappeared! Robin immediately told Cyborg, Raven, and Beast Boy to take care of some generators and go after Slade. They found him pretty quickly, but Starfire couldn’t seem to see him, and he slipped right past her! I couldn’t believe Robin then yelled at Starfire, he really made her cry, before going off to search by himself. The rest of us searched everywhere, but it was like the generators vanished – we couldn’t find a single one!
“Haunted” Featured One of Teen Titans’ Biggest Plot Twists
Robin followed Slade’s trail to the remains of his former hideout, where they fought again. Robin suffered a severe beating, and Slade boasted about using cloaking technology to hide from Starfire. However, when the other Titans arrived to help, they discovered Slade wasn’t real – he was a hallucination. Robin had been injuring himself while mentally replaying his fights with Slade. Cyborg attempted to explain this to Robin, but he wouldn’t accept it, even becoming hostile and threatening his friends if they tried to stop him from pursuing the imaginary Slade. With no other option, Starfire reluctantly knocked Robin unconscious so the Titans could get him home and help him.
Robin woke up in the Titans Tower infirmary, strapped to a bed. Cyborg explained that Robin was otherwise healthy, but his stress had caused his heart rate and blood pressure to jump. When he saw Slade walking toward him with a knife, Robin quickly broke free and locked down the tower to prevent the other Titans from following. Robin and the seemingly imaginary Slade then fought their way through the tower, eventually ending up in the basement. There, Robin’s resolve finally crumbled, and he pleaded with Slade for mercy. Slade responded cruelly, saying he would never stop tormenting him. “I’m the fear that keeps you awake, the darkness in your mind,” Slade declared. “I will never rest, and neither will you.”
Robin suddenly remembered his friends’ warnings that Slade wasn’t real. Considering this, and the fact that Slade had never been hurt in their battles, Robin finally understood he was seeing an illusion. When he switched on the light, Slade disappeared completely. While recovering, Cyborg found a chemical in Slade’s mask that caused the hallucinations, but Robin wasn’t entirely blameless. His intense focus on Slade led him to even look at the mask, and the chemical hadn’t changed who he was – he genuinely lashed out at his friends because his hatred for Slade had taken over.
“Haunted” Was a Fascinating Exploration of Robin’s Psyche
The show Teen Titans generally didn’t acknowledge the larger DC Universe, like Robin’s history as Batman’s partner. However, the episode “Haunted” was an exception, hinting at Batman’s existence. When Raven used her mind-reading powers to learn about Robin’s past, she briefly saw him promising to fight crime with Batman – moments directly from Robin’s first appearance in Detective Comics #38. While these flashbacks weren’t important to the main story, they showed the creators wanted viewers to remember Batman.
Even though Robin from Teen Titans was independent, he shared many traits with Batman. He was intensely focused and distrustful, which led him to make harmful choices despite wanting to help others. Slade acted as a similar kind of chaotic and frightening force in Robin’s life as the Joker was to Batman, constantly challenging him and pushing him to his breaking point. While Teen Titans generally presented young heroes as commonplace, episodes like “Haunted” are particularly unsettling when you consider that Robin and his teammates were just children regularly facing life-or-death situations.
When a story reveals a plot point was all in a character’s mind, it can feel unsatisfying if it isn’t foreshadowed. However, “Haunted” cleverly hinted that Slade wasn’t real throughout the episode. For example, he first appeared during a thunderstorm, and rain didn’t seem to affect him like it did other characters. Similarly, things like tree branches and falling debris didn’t react when Robin touched them, but they did when others did. Even before Slade disappeared, careful viewers could figure out his return wasn’t what it appeared to be.
“Haunted” is an Unforgettable Episode of Teen Titans
The “Haunted” episode featured a truly frightening story and a fittingly dark and unsettling mood. Because the entire episode took place at night, the colors were mostly dark, and the scene where Robin fought his friends was lit by the strange green light of Starfire’s powers. By the end, Robin was a mess – his costume was ripped, his right eye was almost completely swollen shut, and he was covered in bruises. While the show rarely showed characters getting hurt, seeing Robin so badly beaten up was shocking.
The episode “Haunted” didn’t have much of the humor that made Teen Titans popular. It had one joke about someone having a cold, but was otherwise very serious. Many Teen Titans fans disliked the follow-up series, Teen Titans Go!, because it was much sillier. While some of that criticism wasn’t fair – Teen Titans Go! was made for younger viewers and was a different show – episodes like “Haunted” explain why fans were upset to see Teen Titans become a cartoon focused on slapstick comedy.
As a huge Teen Titans fan, I was checking out the top-rated episodes on IMDb, and it’s cool to see the big ones like season finales – “The End Part 3” and “Aftershock Part 2” – are up there, as you’d expect. They really move the whole series story forward. But what really surprised me was seeing “Haunted” so high on the list! It’s a great episode, don’t get me wrong, but it’s a standalone story that doesn’t affect anything that happens later in the show. It’s awesome that a mid-season, self-contained episode could become a fan favorite like that.
