Netflix announces first-ever TV adaptation of the iconic board game Catan

Story Highlights

  • In Catan, you explore vast landscapes, form alliances, and compete for scarce resources while robbers roam the island.
  • It will be produced by Asmodee, Catan Studio, Klaus Teuber’s sons, and Vertigo Entertainment.
  • This joins Netflix’s growing game-to-screen universe alongside Arcane, Castlevania, the upcoming Assassin’s Creed series, and more.

Okay, so huge news for us board game fans! Netflix is finally making a Catan show! I was so excited to hear that they’re partnering with Asmodee – those guys know their games, they’re behind Ticket to Ride and 7 Wonders, so they get it. Apparently, we’re getting both scripted drama and unscripted competition shows based on Catan, which sounds awesome. I can’t wait to see how they bring the game to life on screen!

Netflix is working on film, series, and unscripted projects based on Catan

In a surprising move, Netflix is adapting the popular board game Catan for television. They’re working on both scripted and unscripted shows, bringing the game’s immersive world, ever-changing partnerships, and exciting unpredictability to viewers in a brand new format.

Get ready, CATAN fans! The popular board game by Klaus Teuber is heading to Netflix. For the first time, the world of CATAN will be adapted into a variety of shows and movies, including both live-action and animated formats, as well as unscripted series.

Catan, originally called The Settlers of Catan, was created in 1995 by Klaus Teuber and has been bringing players together with its smart strategy and enjoyable gameplay ever since. Adapting that exciting balance of tension and fun into a digital game seems challenging, but the initial results look good.

An incredible team is working behind the scenes to bring Catan to life

The adaptation will be produced by Darren Kyman of Asmodee, Pete Fenlo from Catan Studio, Klaus Teuber’s sons Guido and Benjamin Teuber, and Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment. Having the sons involved, alongside the team’s extensive experience, suggests the adaptation will stay true to the original source material.

As a huge fan, I was so excited to hear from Thomas Koegler, the CEO of Asmodee! He said he’s really happy the game is reaching more people who’ll get to experience how amazing the world is. Plus, this is just the latest in Netflix’s awesome trend of turning games we love into shows – like they did with Arcane and Castlevania, and they’ve got an Assassin’s Creed series coming up too!

I’m really curious to see how Catan, a popular game already enjoyed on boards, computers, and phones, will be adapted into a compelling movie or series. Given Netflix’s recent success with game adaptations like those from Supercell’s Clash Universe, now seems like the perfect time to bring this worldwide favorite to the screen.
