Will You Need To Watch The OG Buffy The Vampire Slayer To Understand The Reboot? Sarah Michelle Gellar Shared Her Take

I absolutely love Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and it’s one of the greatest supernatural teen dramas of all time. The show originally ran for seven seasons and is still popular today, thanks to streaming on Hulu. Hulu is also developing a potential reboot, starting with a pilot directed by Chloé Zhao. Sarah Michelle Gellar recently shared her thoughts on whether or not you need to be familiar with the original series to enjoy the new version of Buffy.

As a big fan, I was so excited to see Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially returning as Buffy! She was amazing leading the cast for all seven seasons, and her involvement in the reboot pilot felt like a real sign it could happen. I just rewatched the series finale, and it definitely leaves the door open for a continuation, though it might be a lot for new viewers to catch up on. Variety recently asked Sarah if people would need to watch all seven seasons before the reboot airs, and here’s what she said:

Definitely not! But this show is designed to appeal to a wide audience. Like the original, it will include hidden details and references for fans to discover. We also want to attract new viewers who may not be familiar with the show, and hopefully, get them hooked!

I’m definitely excited about the new series! If you didn’t get a chance to watch the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer or don’t want to commit to seven seasons, it sounds like the reboot will be accessible even without that background. However, the first episode apparently has tons of hidden references and nods to the original show, and I can’t wait to find them all.

You can watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer on Hulu, and it’s also where a potential reboot might land! New or returning customers who qualify can try the service for free for 30 days, after which plans start at $9.99 per month. Check out the deal here.

As of today, Hulu hasn’t officially ordered a full season of the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer show. They’ve only filmed a pilot episode, and it was directed by an Academy Award winner, which is promising. Sarah Michelle Gellar recently shared some photos and comments hinting at a possible reboot, and that’s really gotten fans excited. Hopefully, Hulu will announce their decision soon – the wait is agonizing!

The original Buffy series had a long run on network television, with most seasons featuring 22 episodes—all except the first one. Over those years in Sunnydale, the show built up a lot of backstory and inside jokes as the Scooby Gang faced various challenges. As someone who often re-watched my favorite episodes, I thought I’d recognize those subtle references in the reboot’s pilot. But I won’t get the chance to see if that’s true unless Hulu gives the show a full season order.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is aware that just because a pilot is made doesn’t mean a show will actually get picked up – she experienced this firsthand when a Cruel Intentions TV series she worked on never aired. She’s hoping the same doesn’t happen with Buffy, especially since she seems really enthusiastic about returning to her role as the Slayer.

Okay, so good news for anyone craving some supernatural drama – all seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer are now available to stream on Hulu! And while we’re all still holding our breath about that potential revival series, there’s no solid timeline on that just yet. Let’s keep those fingers crossed it actually happens, though – a new dose of Buffy would be amazing!
