Lazarus fans need to see these ending theories – was it all in his head, and did Aidan kill Laura?

The Prime Video series Lazarus ends with a suspenseful and open-ended finale. Throughout the show, Joel ‘Laz’ Lazarus investigates his father’s death, revealing a web of long-hidden secrets.

I’m really hooked on this new six-part drama! It’s about a guy named Laz, played by Sam Claflin, who starts seeing ghosts in his psychiatrist father’s office. It gets even wilder because one of those ghosts is actually his dad, Jonathan Lazarus (played by Bill Nighy), even after he’s passed away. It’s a really intriguing premise!

When Jonathan tells Laz he was murdered, Laz becomes determined to find the killer. His investigation leads him to a new body, exposes a dark conspiracy, and ultimately solves the decades-old mystery of his sister Sutton’s death.

What to Read Next

Let’s discuss the shocking ending and unpack the lingering questions it raised.

What actually happened in the finale of Lazarus?

Even though Olsen claimed he was being unfairly blamed for Sutton’s death, Laz realized Olsen was actually the one responsible. He spotted a stuffed animal Olsen had given him in an old video, and it suddenly clicked that Olsen had taken her own life.

Laz thought about killing Olsen by drowning him, but at the last moment, he decided against it and allowed the police to arrest him instead.

Following a heated confrontation between Arlo Jones and his father at the office, Laz visited Arlo in prison and discovered the real conflict wasn’t with his father, but with Jonathan, who was responsible for Arlo’s arrest.

Arlo strongly insisted he hadn’t killed Imogen, even though she was having an affair with Jonathan.

It turned out that DCI Brown and Jonathan were collaborating on police investigations. Brown used the fake evidence Jonathan provided to falsely convict several individuals, among them Arlo.

It was revealed that Jonathan was responsible for the deaths of Imogen, and his clients, Cassandra and Harry. Brown then forced Jonathan to commit suicide, leaving him with the murder weapon. While pursuing Brown, Laz tragically died in a car accident.

Aidan, recently discovered to be Laz’s son, killed Margot. Laz then found Aidan after a violent encounter with Laura, a psychiatrist and Laz’s romantic partner, shortly after Aidan had seen her for an appointment.

Jenna discovered boxes of recordings from Jonathan’s therapy clients. We then saw Laz listening to them, including a particularly emotional conversation Cassandra had with her father after Sutton died, and his last conversation with Jonathan.

We’ve answered the big questions from this storyline, but some things still aren’t completely resolved.

Was it all in Lazarus’s head?

Since Laz was shown listening to his father’s recordings both at the beginning and end of the series, it’s possible that everything he experienced while investigating Cassandra, Harry, and Imogen was actually a figment of his imagination.

Was Laz’s high-octane journey to solve these crimes all in his head?

If the show doesn’t get continued, we might never get answers. But maybe that’s the idea – for us to decide what it all means ourselves.

Besides encountering ghosts, Laz also had the strange experience of meeting his 18-year-old self and a living Arlo, all while revisiting Jonathan’s memories.

Perhaps this shows Laz isn’t actually seeing ghosts, but rather fully believing what he’s being told?

Jonathan explained to Laz that the drawing in his suicide note represented his belief that time isn’t a straight line, but rather a circle. He believed people repeat the patterns of their fathers, a trait passed down through generations.

Jonathan believes history repeats itself unless someone changes the established cycle. Could this mean Laz, who has struggled for a long time, will resemble his father? It’s worth noting that Aidan already followed the path of his grandfather.

This leads us to the unresolved situation with Laura. The show ended with a shocking scene: Aidan standing in her house, covered in blood, and apologizing to Laz, leaving her fate uncertain.

Is Laura dead?

I’m still trying to figure things out, but if you believe what Jonathan predicted, it doesn’t look good for her. He seemed pretty certain she wouldn’t have made it through that attack – it was really rough to watch.

It’s such a shame about Laura – she only met Laz by accident, and her life could have been so different if she hadn’t gone to that first meeting!
