Star Wars: David Fincher’s Rise of Skywalker Sequel Was Turned Down by Lucasfilm

Before J.J. Abrams took on directing Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, David Fincher—a highly respected director who has won a Golden Globe—was considered for the job. Although he initially declined to direct Episode IX, it appears Fincher remained open to the possibility of directing a Star Wars film at some point.

David Fincher reportedly pitched a sequel idea for The Rise of Skywalker to Lucasfilm, but the project didn’t move forward. According to The InSneider, Lucasfilm couldn’t meet Fincher’s requirements for him to direct it.

Why did Lucasfilm turn down David Fincher’s Rise of Skywalker sequel?

According to reports, Lucasfilm rejected David Fincher’s idea for a sequel to The Rise of Skywalker because they wanted to maintain complete creative control over the film. No further information about Fincher’s proposed movie has been released.

Plus, Kathleen Kennedy, who runs Lucasfilm now, and Fincher have a history – she co-produced his movie ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ back in 2008. So there’s definitely a connection there, and who knows what the future holds?

David Fincher isn’t the only well-known director whose Star Wars idea was rejected. It’s now been revealed that Steven Soderbergh also created a story focused on Kylo Ren, starring Adam Driver. Surprisingly, Disney turned it down, reportedly because executives didn’t believe the character could realistically still be alive.
