The theme of duality is undeniably a common one in superhero fiction. Beyond the idea of secret identities and double lives, heroes are defined by their villains and vice versa. But what happens when the double life is split across two worlds and a choice must be made? That question lies at the center of a new series from Dark Horse Comics – Knight City.
Matt Kindt, known for co-writing the comic series BRZRKR with Keanu Reeves, is the writer for this new series. David Lapham, whose work includes Stray Bullets and American Caper, will be providing the illustrations. Kindt is also handling the coloring, and Joshua Reed will be doing the lettering.
“It’s always great to work with Matt. He has the most effortless imagination of anyone I’ve ever worked with, and somehow still leaves space for collaboration and my bonkers ideas. Knight City is superheroes that are totally familiar but in a way that’s completely sideways and couldn’t come from anyone else,” said Lapham of the collaboration.
The plot of Knight City centers around a legendary hero who is trapped between two worlds. By day, he navigates the skies above his city as a symbol of hope and justice. By night, however, the hero dreams of a mundane world. It is a world without any superheroes at all, where he does not have any powers.
Some might think this is a nightmare for the hero. Instead, it is both a relief and an escape. The hero has spent far too long living in fear of one night off, resulting in the death of an innocent. Soon, this leaves them facing a weighty choice. Do they embrace their powers and the responsibility that comes with them at the risk of their own sanity? Or do they seek the peace that comes with an ordinary life?
“I wanted to write a story where the most powerful hero on earth can’t sleep because he can hear the cries for help no matter where he is…and it’s driving him crazy. Until he wakes up and he has no powers. And he’s a normal guy and happy,” said Kindt of the series. “Then he’s forced to make a choice – does he sacrifice his mental health to help earth or does he protect himself and just live a normal life. I think there’s something compelling about that choice and I’m not sure what the right answer is…so we made this book to figure it out. Working with Dave is pure joy, and he makes everything he touches twice as good.”
