The real story behind Jim Carrey’s disappearance: He once made $20m per film. Now insiders tell TOM LEONARD about the mysterious suicide of his married lover and claims of autism ‘cure’ at the heart of his Hollywood downfall

As a lifestyle observer, I’ve always admired how France confidently charts its own course, particularly when it comes to trends and artistic recognition. And this month’s news about Jim Carrey receiving one of their highest honors perfectly embodies that spirit! It’s a wonderful example of them celebrating talent on their terms, and it’s delightfully French, if you ask me.

Jim Carrey, known for his roles in films like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber, will receive an Honorary Cesar Award – France’s highest film honor – at a ceremony in Paris next February.

The French Academy praised the late king of slapstick comedy, calling him a truly original voice in modern film. They celebrated his work, both in front of and behind the camera, noting that it demonstrates cinema’s power to do more than just provide entertainment.

His work shows incredible courage and a willingness to constantly challenge what’s possible in both performance and art.

Award shows are rarely shy about praising the people they give awards to.

Even people who really enjoy the comedian-turned-actor’s over-the-top, expressive style might hesitate to call his movie choices consistently daring.

The French seem to really like Jim Carrey. He was even awarded a French honor – becoming a Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2010 – partly because he jokingly claims French pirate ancestry. Despite his popularity and talent, however, he’s never even been nominated for an Academy Award.

Despite often talking about striving for peak performance and artistic achievement, his recent work is limited. Aside from voicing a character in the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, he hasn’t appeared in a film for almost ten years.

As a big fan of Jim Carrey, it’s been fascinating watching him in the Sonic movies. He really commits to the role, even though most of his co-stars are created with computer animation – and he often sports a fantastic handlebar moustache while doing it! It’s a unique challenge for an actor, having to play opposite so much CGI, and he handles it brilliantly.

I’m excited to hear Jim Carrey is returning for another Sonic movie in 2027! While it’s great he’ll likely earn a lot from it – two of the previous Sonic films are actually his biggest box office hits – I can’t help but feel it won’t really add to his reputation as a truly great actor. It’s a fun role, but not exactly challenging, you know?

His most recent film before the Sonic movies, a dark detective drama called Dark Crimes released in 2016, was a critical and commercial failure. It received a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earned only $27,000 worldwide – an amount so low it’s considered negligible by industry standards.

Carrey also appeared in The Bad Batch, a dystopian thriller released in 2016, but only in a brief cameo. Like Neon Demon, it wasn’t successful and received very limited theatrical release.

Considering Jim Carrey once earned $20 million per movie and was among Hollywood’s top-paid actors, this situation clearly shows how much his career has declined.

Before the Sonic the Hedgehog movie became a success, Jim Carrey hadn’t starred in a major blockbuster (earning over $100 million) since the animated film A Christmas Carol in 2009, where he provided the voice for Scrooge. That same year also marked the last time critics generally praised one of his films – the dark comedy I Love You Phillip Morris, which featured Ewan McGregor.

Beyond causing confusion about how the academy made its decision, the announcement mainly leaves everyone wondering: what ever happened to Jim Carrey?

He’s largely vanished from public view, only appearing in news stories recently due to his struggles to sell his house in the upscale Brentwood area of Los Angeles.

For some online, the house had become something of a metaphor for his diminishing career.

He purchased the 12,700 square-foot, five-bedroom home for $3.8 million in 1994, when he was at the peak of his career. In 2023, he put it on the market for $28.9 million, describing it as a magical and inspiring place where he’d spent over 30 successful and creatively fulfilling years.

He recalled how owls serenaded him to sleep each night, and every morning he enjoyed coffee with hawks and hummingbirds beneath a massive pine tree.

I used to think a celebrity endorsement almost always meant a property would fly off the market. But with Jim Carrey, it just didn’t seem to make a difference – it didn’t have the impact you’d expect.

He lowered the price multiple times, even after a potential buyer cancelled a deal that was already $10 million below the original asking price. Finally, he sold the property in August for $17 million.

Jim Carrey, previously thought to be worth around $300 million, hinted he might be facing financial difficulties when he jokingly explained at the London premiere of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 last December that he agreed to make another movie simply because ‘I spent a lot of money and need the cash.’

According to a source who spoke to the Daily Mail, the actor – known for often exaggerating – was only pretending to have money problems. The source said he sold his house simply because he wanted a fresh start after living there for nearly three decades.

Jim Carrey has made a significant lifestyle change, now living on the Hawaiian island of Maui, where he became a resident in 2017. He spends most of his time there – a considerable distance and six-hour flight from Hollywood – and showcases his artwork, which is currently his main focus, at a gallery in the Wailea resort area.

You know, I’ve always been a big believer in finding peace within yourself, and for me, that often means enjoying my own company. I shared a while back that my home life is pretty solitary – I genuinely love spending time alone, and it works really well for me. I know that might sound unusual to some, but it’s a key part of how I recharge and stay grounded.

According to a source, several film projects are in the works but are still being finalized, so details can’t be shared just yet. The insider said these projects, which are currently in delicate discussions, are expected to be announced next year – and surprisingly, they aren’t related to Sonic the Hedgehog.

A live-action movie based on the classic 1960s cartoon, The Jetsons – featuring the futuristic Jetson family, George, Jane, Judy, and Elroy – is in the works. Actor Jim Carrey is currently being considered for a leading role in the Warner Bros. film.

It would be a big deal if Jim Carrey returned to the screen in a movie that most teenagers and adults would enjoy, especially since he hinted in early 2022 that he was considering retirement from acting.

He explained that he was content with his peaceful life, finding joy in painting and his faith. Remarkably, he felt completely fulfilled, stating he had achieved everything he needed to and was happy with who he was – a sentiment he believed was rare for someone in the public eye.

He wasn’t completely ruling out acting after retirement, saying he might consider a project if it was truly special and meaningful. He’s taking a break, but wouldn’t say no to a fantastic role – something that felt destined to be made.

The producers of Sonic The Hedgehog 3 reportedly did indeed send him a script written in gold ink.

Although he didn’t seem to think it was essential viewing, Jim Carrey ultimately agreed to do the film. Aside from his work on the Sonic movies, his absence from movies is surprising considering how constantly he used to appear in them. For example, in 1994, he starred in three of the year’s biggest hits.

It was a remarkable occasion for the performer, considering their family had faced serious financial hardship after their father, a musician, lost his job, forcing them to live in a trailer.

When Jim Carrey was 15, family circumstances meant he had to leave school and take a job cleaning at a tire factory to help support his parents.

Jim Carrey has said that growing up with financial hardship influenced his career choices. While he’s known for successful, popular films, he’s also taken on critically praised roles, such as his performance as a man unknowingly living in a reality TV show in The Truman Show (1998), and in the dark comedy Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004).

However, if Jim Carrey intends to return to acting beyond just appearing in digitally created roles for video games, he may find that many people aren’t very excited about it.

After his final leading role in the film Dark Crimes failed to gain traction, some in Hollywood began to critique his acting style, calling it predictable and his on-screen energy divisive – people either loved it or hated it. Critics often said that even a small amount of Jim Carrey’s performance style could be overwhelming.

It just killed me to watch the change. He used to be this amazing, lovable guy everyone could enjoy, but then he just…started ranting about politics all the time. It was awful! He managed to upset everyone – people on the left couldn’t stand his stuff about vaccines, and the right just lost it with how much he hated Trump. It was like he wanted to alienate all his fans, and honestly, it broke my heart to see him go from being so universally loved to someone everyone argued with.

Jim Carrey has been married twice. He first married actress Melissa Womer in 1987, and later married his “Dumb and Dumber” co-star, Lauren Holly, in 1996.

From 2005 to 2010, Jim Carrey dated actress and model Jenny McCarthy, who believed an unproven treatment had helped her son with autism. He publicly supported her, and together they falsely claimed that vaccines cause autism – a claim that has been widely debunked.

One critic dismissed his anti-vaccine statements as ‘angry, dense and immune to reason’.

Other actors, however, criticized his intense dedication to ‘method acting,’ noting that he stayed in character even when the cameras weren’t rolling.

Martin Freeman, a British actor who appeared alongside Jim Carrey in the film Man on the Moon (where Carrey portrayed Andy Kaufman), later described Carrey’s off-screen personality as difficult. He called Carrey self-absorbed, selfish, and narcissistic, and characterized his behavior as bizarre and affected.

Okay, so you won’t BELIEVE how dedicated Jim Carrey was to playing Andy Kaufman! He absolutely insisted everyone call him ‘Andy,’ not Jim, all the time – on set, off set, it didn’t matter. It was seriously mind-blowing! And get this – apparently, when Andy’s actual family came to visit the studio, Jim stayed in character the whole time, acting like he was Andy! Can you imagine?! Plus, he told Freeman about a two-hour phone call with Ron Howard where he stayed as Andy to discuss ‘The Grinch’! Two hours! He didn’t break character once! It was just… intense. He really became Andy, it was incredible to witness, honestly.

Jim Carrey describes his relationship with fame as difficult and unsettling, and says it’s been made even harder by his struggles with depression.

In 1995, his ex-wife, Melissa Womer, revealed that he often spent nights crying and observed that his cheerful public image was just a facade – a way of hiding his true feelings.

In his 2020 book, a blend of fiction and personal experiences called Memoirs And Misinformation, he explained that his career stalled after the film I Love You Phillip Morris. The movie faced distribution issues, largely due to a scene showing him in a sexual encounter with Ewan McGregor.

As a huge fan, it was really disheartening to hear that after his initial success, both Disney and Paramount apparently shelved the projects they had planned with Jim Carrey. Even worse, his own agency then strong-armed him into making Mr. Popper’s Penguins – a movie that, let’s be honest, wasn’t really his style and definitely didn’t showcase his incredible talent.

Despite his personal struggles, Carrey couldn’t fault the film industry. He’d been romantically involved with several well-known women, including actresses Renee Zellweger and January Jones, and singer Linda Ronstadt – with Ronstadt, he was just 21 while she was 36.

People who knew him often described Jim Carrey as very self-centered and afraid of getting close to others. In 2012, he began a relationship with Cathriona White, a makeup artist from Ireland, even though she was already married.

Three years later, she died from an accidental overdose of prescription medication, only four days after ending her relationship with Carrey for the second time. A suicide note revealed she was deeply saddened by their breakup.

Mark Burton, the husband of the deceased, filed a lawsuit alleging wrongful death against Jim Carrey. Carrey had previously served as a pallbearer at the funeral in County Tipperary.

According to Burton, the celebrity used his significant money and fame to illegally get and share highly addictive prescription drugs with Ms. White, even though he knew she struggled with depression and had previously tried to end her life.

For good measure, he also accused Carrey of giving his wife a trio of venereal diseases.

Jim Carrey claimed he wasn’t to blame for her death, even though he admitted the drugs belonged to him. However, the following year, in 2016, Cathriona’s mother, Brigid Sweetman, sued him, accusing him of being a dishonest celebrity who used his fame to mislead others.

Both lawsuits were dismissed in 2018 but not before Carrey’s public image had taken a battering.

In a December interview, Jim Carrey explained that taking a break from acting had made him value Hollywood more.

He continued, explaining that he also appreciates giving people space. He dislikes those who are constantly intrusive and prefers to let people have some peace.

But will his critics agree that a decade away is long enough?
