Gucci Mane has schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Keyshia Ka’oir has been his rock through it all

Rapper Gucci Mane’s newest release might be his most vulnerable yet.

During a Monday appearance on “The Breakfast Club,” Atlanta musician Gucci Mane shared that he’s been diagnosed with both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. He also discussed how he’s been managing these conditions, with significant support from his wife, Keyshia Ka’oir, who has been instrumental in his journey.

Gucci Mane, whose real name is Radric Davis, recently shared that he started seeing a therapist after a difficult time during the pandemic. The 45-year-old rapper explained that the experience made him realize he needed to prioritize his mental and overall health, and take responsibility for his well-being. He discussed this with his wife, Keyshia Ka’oir, in a recent interview.

The rapper said they never want to go through something like this again. They’re committed to getting help, even if that means going to therapy or taking medication. They feel like they’d reached their limit, but they’re determined to do whatever it takes to improve their well-being.

Gucci Mane recently shared that he wasn’t doing well emotionally when he got the face tattoo of ice cream cones that everyone remembers.

Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness that impacts a person’s thoughts, feelings, and actions, explains the Mayo Clinic. People with schizophrenia – which can be treated with medication and therapy – may experience hallucinations, false beliefs, and difficulty thinking clearly, potentially leading to a disconnect from reality.

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that causes significant shifts in mood, thinking, energy levels, and behavior, explains the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance. While many people associate it with manic episodes – periods of unusually high energy and mood – it’s actually more common for those with bipolar disorder to experience episodes of depression.

During a one-hour discussion, rapper Gucci Mane and his wife, Keyshia Ka’oir, talked about the challenges he’s faced over the years and how those difficulties impacted their relationship. The couple, who married in 2017 and have two children, revealed that Ka’oir had witnessed Gucci Mane’s struggles even before they got married.

Throughout the show, you’re watching someone you haven’t really gotten to know yet,” explained Ka’oir, born Keyshia Watson and previously known as Keyshia Dior. She remembers the rapper saying things that were hurtful, but she realized he didn’t intend to be malicious. “I believed that if I had left him, he would have struggled,” she shared on Monday. “He really needed someone to support him.”

Chance the Rapper is discussing his upcoming second album, describing it as his most ambitious and wide-ranging project yet.

“I’m cool with this,” Ka’oir recalled thinking when someone voiced concern for their marriage.

Yasmin Ka’oir, the wife of Grammy-nominated rapper “Exactly How I Feel,” shared that managing his health issues was difficult. She explained that she and his close friends orchestrated a plan to get him to a hospital for treatment, essentially taking him there without his initial consent. Despite concerns from others, Ka’oir was certain he would never harm her.

Gucci Mane, who previously served time in federal prison (ending in 2016), expressed regret for past comments made during interviews. After being released, he apologized to several rappers, including Rick Ross, Drake, and Nicki Minaj. Minaj herself reacted to the interview, suggesting on X (formerly Twitter) that Gucci’s wife, Ka’oir, had sedated him.

He admitted he felt awful, and said apologizing to his colleagues felt like a huge relief.

Ka’oir explained that she managed her husband’s social media to shield the public from his difficult moments. She learned to recognize the early signs of an episode—like harsh comments or strange requests—before it escalated. Gucci Mane described these episodes, which he called “psychosis,” as times when he would hear negative voices talking about the people he cared about.

A popular new trend in classrooms started with a song called “Doot Doot (6 7)” by the rapper Skrilla.

He shared that things like using drugs, feeling stressed, and not getting enough sleep would often lead to difficult times for him. What really hurt, he said, was that other people in the music industry didn’t offer him any support when he was struggling.

During the interview, Gucci Mane repeatedly emphasized how important family is to him. He explained that he got help to be a better parent and raise his children alongside Ka’oir.

Honestly, when I think about it, marrying her was the smartest thing I ever did. It’s not about grand gestures, you know? It’s about having someone who keeps me grounded, and someone to just…chill with. Sometimes, all I really want is a good movie and her by my side. I really don’t need much more than that to be happy.

Rapper Gucci Mane dropped both his new memoir and a new album this Friday, and both are called “Episodes.” This is his third book, following previous memoirs published in 2017 and 2020.
