Sir Nick Clegg earned as much as £117 million while working at Meta, Facebook’s parent company. However, he says he quickly faced criticism from employees at the company’s California headquarters, who were offended by something he did soon after arriving.
He noticed posters everywhere with overused phrases, like ‘Bring your authentic self to work,’ he explained.
Trying to lighten the mood like they do in the British Parliament, I jokingly told my new colleagues to leave their true selves at home and pretend at work. I explained that I’d play along from nine to five, and then everyone could be themselves after hours – that way, we’d all get along great.
Sir Nick, age 58, shared with an audience at the Wimbledon Bookfest in London that his statement was met with complete silence by the young, casually dressed employees who were due to work under him.
I’ll never forget when someone approached me afterwards and, honestly, seemed a little concerned. They suggested I take a course – almost like they wanted to correct my behavior! It got me thinking about how often we hear about ‘bringing your whole self to work’ and being ‘authentic,’ especially in places like Silicon Valley. I remember reading that Meta’s former HR head, Lori Goler, actually complimented Mark Zuckerberg for being ‘so human and authentic’ with his team. It’s just… a whole thing they emphasize a lot.
Former deputy prime minister Clegg admits such jargon came as a culture shock.
I’m used to a lively and often cheeky sense of humor from my time in Westminster. It was common to use jokes and playful banter to ease tension and start conversations.
Silicon Valley is a genuinely sincere environment, unlike the often ironic and witty atmosphere you’d find in a place like Westminster.
‘Sharp’ Lady Annabel told off doctors in final hours
Lady Annabel Goldsmith, who recently passed away at the age of 91, remained lively and energetic throughout her life.
As a lifestyle observer, I’ve been keeping up with the social scene, and it’s lovely to see Lady Goldsmith doing so well! She managed to attend her son Zac’s wedding just last month, and even seemed incredibly cheerful and energetic during a hospital visit last Friday. It’s a testament to her spirit, really.
Her daughter, TV producer Jemima Goldsmith, remembers her mother as witty and quick-minded right until the end. Once, while in the hospital (where she wasn’t thrilled to be), a doctor spoke to her very slowly and deliberately, as if she were confused, asking ‘Do you understand me?’ She immediately replied, ‘I have a stomach ache, not Alzheimer’s!’
‘A few hours later, she died peacefully in her sleep. I’m grateful for that. She was so loved.’
Ant & Dec’s Byker Grove reunion

Ant and Dec, along with Donna Air, first became famous over 30 years ago when they appeared on the TV show Byker Grove, a drama aimed at teenagers.
The three friends from Newcastle recently met up again at the Variety Club Showbusiness Awards, held in London’s Leicester Square, and reminisced about old times.
Donna, 49, who starred as Charlie Charlton in the BBC series for three years, says it’s wonderful to reunite with her former co-stars. She explains it feels like no time has passed at all, similar to the strong connection people often feel with their schoolmates – Byker Grove was like their school.

Donna hasn’t said no to the idea of being in the new series, Byker. She’s starting to feel eager to act again and thinks Byker might be a good project to return with, saying, ‘I’m getting the itch back, so it’s time to get back on set. Byker could be a good place to start.’
Despite potentially being worth a lot to collectors, Oasis legend Noel Gallagher donates his designer clothes – including his famous Stone Island jackets, Adidas trainers, and CP Company outfits – to his local charity shop. The 58-year-old guitarist explains he isn’t one to hold onto things. He admits his wardrobe gets very full before he decides to give everything away at once.
Leaving my children was cruel, says Sir David Hare
Playwright Sir David Hare recently revealed he left his three children, including twin infants, because he felt he couldn’t have continued his life and career if he’d remained married to their mother, film producer Margaret Matheson.
Sir David, 78, confesses to making a terrible mistake. He explains that he feared he wouldn’t be able to cope with life if he stayed married, but acknowledges that leaving his wife with their six-month-old twins was a deeply hurtful thing to do.
Oh, it was awful, absolutely awful, when it all fell apart with his first wife back in 1980. Apparently, he had something with Kate Nelligan, the actress, and everything just… crumbled. But you know what’s crazy? He actually talked about it on this podcast, Rosebud, and said the whole thing, as painful as it was, was like hitting the jackpot for his writing! He called it a ‘goldmine’ for his scripts! Can you believe it? He finds inspiration in heartbreak, honestly, it’s just… chef’s kiss. It explains so much about his work, doesn’t it?
He’s now close with his children, but he believes they’ve moved past wanting to understand why he left so long ago.
Earl’s girls! Snowdon takes two dates to gala

Since his divorce from Serena in 2020 – after almost 30 years of marriage – the Earl of Snowdon seems to be enjoying the company of many women.
King Charles’s cousin, David, 63, attended the first-ever amfAR London gala with two women. He was accompanied by his girlfriend, 54-year-old Isabelle de la Bruyere, who used to work at Christie’s, and Isabelle’s friend, 49-year-old Reem Abu Samra, a cake designer.
I was completely captivated by the earl at the gala – someone described him as an old-school charmer, and I couldn’t agree more! It was wonderful to be a part of an event that raised over £2 million for charity, all at the beautiful Rosewood hotel in Mayfair.
