After a lawsuit filed by the Federal Trade Commission last month, Ticketmaster has promised to update its practices.
The Federal Trade Commission is taking legal action against Ticketmaster and its parent company, Live Nation Entertainment, claiming they’ve been using unfair and illegal practices when selling tickets. In a letter sent to lawmakers on October 17th, Live Nation executive Daniel Wall refuted these claims and stated the company will be introducing changes to improve the ticket-buying experience for fans.
With these updated policies, the ticket seller will only permit one account per customer. Any extra accounts will be closed, and each ticket reseller will need to provide a unique tax ID.
The letter also reveals the company will be closing TradeDesk, its app for managing ticket inventory. This software helps ticket resellers monitor and price tickets on various platforms, and often handles large volumes. TradeDesk has faced accusations of enabling ticket harvesting, but the company denies this, stating it doesn’t buy tickets itself. They also point out that competitors like StubHub and Vivid Seats utilize comparable software.
Live Nation is taking steps to improve its image by removing a service from TradeDesk that handled concert ticket management.
This isn’t the first time Live Nation has been sued. Last year, the Department of Justice also sued the company, even proposing a breakup because of concerns that it had become a monopoly.
Despite the ongoing legal battles, fans are still struggling to buy tickets and are often forced to pay inflated prices to resellers.
Ticketmaster was established in 1976 and has been the leading ticket seller since 1995, handling approximately 80% of all live concert tickets. More recently, the company has also been increasing its presence in the resale market. Between 2019 and 2024, consumers spent over $82.6 billion on tickets through the Beverly Hills-based company, according to the Federal Trade Commission.
The vendor plans to add new AI tools that will confirm identities, block unauthorized users, and help prevent fraudulent transactions.
