‘Wicked: For Good’ ruins its own secret about the Cowardly Lion’s casting with cute announcement

Colman Domingo will see you in Oz.

Okay, movie fans, this is exciting! The actor who was nominated for an Oscar is going to voice the Cowardly Lion in the new “Wicked” movie, “Wicked: For Good.” They announced it yesterday with a really cute video on Instagram – both the movie’s account and the actor’s posted it. It showed him hiding behind a little lion stuffed animal before they revealed it was him! Super clever way to announce it, honestly.

In a recent interview with Deadline, director Jon M. Chu didn’t reveal who he’d chosen to play a role in the second part of his “Wicked” movie adaptation, keeping the casting a secret.

Ever wondered why the musical ‘Wicked’ is being released in two movies? Or what the famous ‘Defying Gravity’ scene in the Emerald City really symbolizes? The team who created the hit musical explains everything.

He hinted at a big surprise for the red carpet, saying, “Just wait until the actor who voiced the Cowardly Lion arrives – it’s going to be amazing!” He was referring to a casting announcement that hadn’t been made public yet.

He did share, though, that he first contacted the famous actor—now identified as Domingo—by sending him a direct message on social media.

So, I hit up this actor on Instagram, thinking he might be too swamped to help with a small part. I figured I’d offer to go to *him* to make it easier. To my surprise, he was totally game – he basically said, ‘Why not? Let’s do it!’ – and we recorded his lines right then and there. It was awesome!

The Cowardly Lion, well-known as Dorothy’s friend in “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” has a backstory explored in the musical “Wicked.” The story reveals him as a young cub brought to Shiz University by a professor, despite the school’s ban on animals as teachers. Elphaba, angered by this, helps the cub escape. The upcoming movie, “Wicked: For Good,” takes place years later and will show what became of that rescued cub – now a fully grown lion.

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande reprise their roles as Elphaba and Glinda in “Wicked: For Good,” portraying the characters before they become known as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good. The film also brings back familiar faces including Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Ethan Slater as Boq, and Marissa Bode as Nessarose.

The movie will hit theaters Nov. 21.
