Okay, so it doesn’t look like Sylvester Stallone will be lacing up the gloves as Rocky again, but there’s a new movie in the works about how the original *Rocky* came to be! They’ve cast someone to play Stallone himself, showing his journey to becoming a star, and from what I’ve seen, the guy really nails the look. It’s a relief to see they got the casting right, honestly!
Amazon MGM Studios has shared the first image of Anthony Ippolito portraying Sylvester Stallone in the upcoming film, *I Play Rocky*. Ippolito, who previously played a young Al Pacino in Paramount+’s *The Offer*, is taking on the most significant role of his career in this new biographical drama. According to *The Hollywood Reporter*, Ippolito proactively sent the filmmakers an audition tape, and his determination – and a noticeable similarity to Stallone’s own spirit when making *Rocky* – quickly impressed them. You can see the first look image below.
Peter Farrelly, the director who won an Oscar, is directing *I Play Rocky*, a film based on a screenplay by Peter Gamble (known for *Office Uprising*). Farrelly has praised Gamble’s script as one of the best he’s ever seen, detailing Sylvester Stallone’s difficult fight to get *Rocky* made exactly how he envisioned it. Stallone famously turned down lucrative offers from big studios to play the lead role himself, even though he was facing financial hardship and hadn’t starred in many films before.
This script is truly one of the best I’ve ever come across. The writer, Peter Gamble, was completely unknown to me – he’s a teacher at USC. Toby Emmerich, who’s producing the project, urged me to read it, saying he thought it was something special. It tells the story of how ‘Rocky’ was made, and I learned so much I didn’t know before. Apparently, Stallone was struggling immensely when he wrote it – he was homeless, living in Penn Station, and even worked in softcore films. He was completely broke and, heartbreakingly, even had to sell his dog.
