Patrick Mahomes Said Acting In State Farm Commercials Helped Him Pull Off Trick Play

I’ve watched so many football games where it’s fourth down, around midfield, and you just *know* what’s coming. The coach pretends to go for it, tries to draw the defense offsides with those fake counts, then calls timeout and punts. It’s become such a routine play! But this past Sunday, the Chiefs surprised everyone. Instead of punting, they actually *ran* a play and got a first down! It was amazing. And get this – after the game, Patrick Mahomes joked that practicing his hard counts for those State Farm commercials actually helped him trick the defense!

The play happened early in the second quarter. Facing fourth down and one yard to go on their own 40-yard line, Mahomes used some fake starts before the snap, hoping to draw a penalty from the Raiders. Frustrated, he audibly complained to the sidelines – using a strong expletive – that this tactic never works. The announcers chuckled when the microphones picked up his language. Surprisingly, he then snapped the ball and handed off to Kareem Hunt, who successfully ran for a first down.

The surprising play worked perfectly, and everyone was talking about it after the Chiefs won 31-0 (with Taylor Swift watching from a suite!). When asked how he managed it, Mahomes jokingly credited his experience making commercials.

I think it comes from all my State Farm commercials.

Once the laughter died down, Mahomes immediately praised his offensive coordinator and the offensive linemen who were still responsible for blocking the opposing team. He explained that their work enabled Hunt to gain the first down, not a clever performance. Still, Mahomes admitted Hunt’s acting was surprisingly good, and joked that his experience filming State Farm commercials likely helped him remember his lines.

Video of the play is widely circulating on social media. It’s notable that the strong language used during the play was so prominent that announcer Tony Romo felt the need to apologize to viewers.

As a big movie and sports fan, I’m really curious to see what Patrick Mahomes does with all his endorsement deals as he gets older and eventually retires. You look at guys like Michael Jordan – he pops up in commercials now and then, but mostly stays pretty private. Then you have players like Peyton Manning and Charles Barkley who’ve totally reinvented themselves with successful media careers and become the faces of tons of different brands. It’ll be fascinating to see which path Mahomes takes!

Mahomes is already incredibly successful, which means he’ll likely get many opportunities for endorsements and commercials. He’s known for being personable and has a great connection with both his coach, Andy Reid, and teammate Travis Kelce – they even star in State Farm ads together! He could easily expand his presence in the advertising world if he chooses, but he also seems content with doing it occasionally.

The Chiefs began the season with two losses, but they’ve recently turned things around, winning four out of their last five games and are once again looking like a team that could compete for the Super Bowl.
