The sequel to the live-action *How to Train Your Dragon* is coming along quickly, which is great news for fans! The first live-action movie was a huge success, earning over $635.9 million worldwide, and people are eager to see more of Hiccup and Toothless. A recent update confirms that Universal Pictures is ahead of schedule with the new film, meaning fans won’t have to wait as long as they might have expected.
The movie How to Train Your Dragon, which came out last summer, received a lot of positive reviews, especially for Mason Thames’ performance as the main character, Hiccup. Thames recently told TopMob, while discussing his new film Black Phone 2, that work on a sequel will start soon.
When asked about the confirmed sequel, Thames shared that filming will begin on November 1st, which is sooner than expected, considering the movie is currently slated for release on June 11, 2027.
TopMob excitedly announced the upcoming release of ‘How to Train Your Dragon 2,’ asking when fans can expect to revisit the world and see Hiccup again.
Thames: “I go out to start November 1.”
When asked about returning to the *How to Train Your Dragon* franchise, the actor’s excitement was clear. He shared that the character is very important to him and revealed he’s already been shown ideas for the upcoming film.
I’m incredibly excited to revisit this character – it’s a role I deeply care about. Being able to return and work on it again is fantastic. I’ve also been impressed with the early ideas and I’m thrilled to see so many talented people joining the project.
Thames explained he’s limited in what he can share about how closely the new project follows *How to Train Your Dragon 2*, but confirmed it will be a faithful adaptation of the animated film.
TopMob: “How similar is it to the second animated film?”
Thames shared that while they can’t reveal much detail, the second installment in the trilogy is their personal favorite and they’re very excited about how it’s developing.
Although it seems like it’s happening quickly, development on *How to Train Your Dragon 2* actually started several months ago, even before the first live-action movie was released. The sequel was officially announced at CinemaCon 2025, during the first film’s premiere, and will follow Universal’s strategy of adapting its animated hits into large-scale live-action movies – a model Disney pioneered.
Just like Disney, Universal Orlando Resort is making a big splash with this franchise. It will have its own dedicated area, called Berk, within the new Epic Universe theme park.
DreamWorks Animation is planning a live-action remake of one of its animated sequels, scheduled to hit theaters on June 11, 2027. The original voice actors, including Thames, Nico Parker, and Gerard Butler, are returning to play their characters in this new version.
What Happens in How to Train Your Dragon 2?
The upcoming live-action movie will likely recreate many of the exciting and heartfelt scenes from the 2014 animated film. Taking place five years after the original story (though that timeline could change), it follows Hiccup and Toothless as they discover new territories and confront Drago Bludvist, a villain determined to dominate all dragons.
The story features a major surprise: the return of Hiccup’s mother, Valka, who was thought to be lost. It also includes the sad death of Stoick the Vast.
Now that production is scheduled to begin in November, everyone is eager to find out who will play Hiccup’s mother – and it’s a role that could draw a well-known actress.
