The critically acclaimed sci-fi thriller *Ex Machina*, featuring Alicia Vikander and Oscar Isaac, is now available on Netflix. Directed and written by Alex Garland, who also made *Annihilation* (2018), *Civil War* (2024), and the upcoming *Warfare* (2025), the film has been widely praised. The *Associated Press* called it both “unique” and “unforgettable.”
Released in 2014, the movie *Ex Machina* centers around Caleb Smith, a programmer who gets a unique job offer. He’s hired by tech CEO Nathan Bateman to evaluate Ava, a highly advanced artificial intelligence robot, and decide if she can actually think and feel.
Critics have overwhelmingly praised *Ex Machina*, giving it a 92% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The *Globe and Mail* called it a smart film, highlighting Oscar Isaac’s memorable performance.

According to *The Daily Telegraph*, this science fiction is remarkably clever and a welcome rarity, demonstrating genuine, not artificial, intelligence.
In a review, *Empire Magazine* praised the film as stylish, elegant, tense, and thought-provoking, with a touch of dark humor and creepiness. They highlighted it as director Garland’s strongest work to date and lauded Vikander’s performance as captivating and electrifying.
Because of overwhelmingly positive reviews, *Ex Machina* is now among Isaac’s best-reviewed films on Rotten Tomatoes.
The site also ranks this among its five best films. Several movies have received very high scores: *Star Wars: The Force Awakens* (2015) and *Drive* (2011) both earned a 93% rating, while *Inside Llewyn Davis* (2013) and *Ex Machina* received 92%. *Star Wars: The Last Jedi* is close behind with a score of 91%.
Isaac is keeping busy and has a new film coming out. He’ll be playing Victor Frankenstein in Guillermo del Toro’s version of the classic story, where he’s the scientist who creates a living creature.
Isaac recently shared on the *Variety Awards Circuit Podcast* that he’s surprisingly enjoying playing his character, despite the role involving some very intense and angry moments. He admitted he didn’t anticipate finding it so fun and fulfilling, even with all the character’s ‘damage’ and rage.
The movie *Frankenstein* is playing in some US theaters now, and will be available to stream on Netflix starting November 7, 2025.
The film features a talented cast, with Jacob Elordi portraying Frankenstein’s monster and Mia Goth as Elizabeth Harlander, the woman Victor is in love with. Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, Christoph Waltz, and Charles Dance also appear in the movie.
Ex Machina is currently available to stream on Netflix.
