Although the broader Marvel Comics universe will continue, one significant storyline—the Ultimates—is concluding with the 2026 release of *Ultimates Endgame*. This isn’t a typical restart or temporary ending, but a definitive conclusion, which surprised many fans given how often comic book “endings” turn out to be anything but. Writer Deniz Camp recently clarified on social media that the series isn’t ending due to concerns about its content or any personnel changes.
At New York Comic Con, Marvel announced that their Ultimates Universe will conclude next year. This news sparked concern among fans who felt Jonathan Hickman, the creator of both Ultimate Spider-Man and the universe itself, hadn’t been treated fairly. However, Marvel has clarified that this is not the case.
The headline is misleading and overblown, even though the story isn’t completely false. It suggests people are being forced out, but that doesn’t seem to be happening, based on what I’ve been told. Hickman simply didn’t expect Marvel to take such a daring step, but he fully supports and is enthusiastic about it.
I never intended to completely finish the story – my goal was to introduce characters who could continue even after I stopped writing. I think I’ve made that pretty clear. However, John’s storyline was always going to end at issue 24. That was a planned conclusion for him. Similarly, Peach and Bryan also decided to wrap up their characters’ stories when the Maker escaped. It was their choice to end those storylines.
The Ultimates Universe Is Reaching a “Natural Conclusion.”

Marvel Comic
Camp explained he’d initially hoped certain elements of the Ultimates universe could have continued, but the decision to conclude it wasn’t a sudden one.
We had plans for more of the ‘Ultimates’ series and were also talking about starting new titles – I really wanted to do a Hawkeye book, and we’d discussed the Guardians of the Galaxy too. It was all still pretty uncertain, though. Then, Wil Moss told me they’d decided to wrap things up completely. That conversation happened quite a while ago, probably over a year ago, but I’d need to double-check the exact timing.
Camp also clarified that the recent changes in Marvel weren’t due to online criticism about so-called “wokeness,” or any other false rumors circulating on social media since the announcement last week.
These books aren‘t facing backlash because of supposed ‘wokeness’ – the writing itself hasn’t been affected. And it’s not about any competition between publishers, as they all prioritize profit. The real reason for the changes seems to be that the storylines were simply reaching a logical ending point.
Though fans will miss the Ultimate Universe, it’s better for a story to end strong rather than go on for too long, and it appears that’s what’s happening here. The final issue, *Ultimate Endgame*, is scheduled to come out in 2026.
