Star of HBO’s Best New Crime Thriller Gets Candid About “Inevitable” Fate

Be warned, the following contains spoilers for the HBO Max series *Task*. Episode 6 of *Task* delivered some of the show’s most intense moments yet, including a violent confrontation with deadly consequences. In a shocking turn of events, Robbie Prendergast (played by Tom Pelphrey) – one of the show’s main characters – was fatally stabbed and died in the arms of agent Tom Brandis (Mark Ruffalo). Interestingly, Tom Pelphrey has stated he believed his character’s death was necessary to stay true to the story’s core.

Actor Felix Solis, who played Ben Davis in *Ozark*, recently discussed his character’s relatively early death with *Collider*. He emphasized his strong desire to work with writer and showrunner Brad Ingelsby (*Mare of Easttown*), stating he wouldn’t have missed out on an Ingelsby script for anything. Solis also revealed that reading the script made him realize his character’s fate was sealed.

As an actor, when I really connect with a character – and that’s always what I’m aiming for – I genuinely wanted Robbie to make it and be reunited with his family in Canada. I really focused on portraying that hope in every scene. But, honestly, there’s also the part of me that appreciates a well-crafted story, and that side of me understood the narrative needed to unfold as it did. It just *had* to happen the way it did to be truthful and honest to the overall arc.

I had a similar reaction to Ozark. I really connected with that character, and as I was reading, I realized there was only one logical outcome, considering the story’s setting, the established rules, and the characters involved – if we wanted to be true to the narrative.

The series *Task* concludes this Sunday with its final episode premiering on HBO Max at 9 PM Eastern and Pacific time. In the seventh and final episode, agents Tom Brandis and Aleah Clinton will attempt to stop Anthony Grasso, who has been exposed as a mole working for the opposing side. Grasso’s betrayal led to the death of agent Lizzie Stover.

Pelphrey also highlighted Brad Ingelsby’s talent for writing characters who aren’t simply good or bad, but morally complex and unpredictable. In the show *Task*, the distinction between right and wrong is often unclear.

It’s incredibly inspiring to witness someone like Brad portray characters with such honesty, not just Robbie in ‘Task,’ but across the board. He really prioritizes that depth. As both an actor and a person – and I see a lot of that same quality in Brad – I believe that’s a topic worth revisiting endlessly. And I don’t think any of us ever tire of seeing that kind of truthful portrayal.

That’s a really interesting point and deserves a thorough look. It might even be worth emphasizing what you just said. Honestly, I don’t think there’s a clear distinction between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ people in this situation.
