At last night’s Best Heroes Awards in London’s Waldorf Hotel, Vanessa Feltz told Digital Spy about an everyday hero who made a big impression on her years ago.
During an evening celebrating everyday people who’ve made remarkable, selfless contributions through charity and kindness, we asked our celebrity guests to share stories of heroes they knew who hadn’t received much recognition.
Vanessa shared that becoming a parent makes you realize how often someone needs medical help. She reflected on how grateful she was for the doctors and nurses in the National Health Service who had cared for her and her children, often at all hours.

I was in the hospital recovering from surgery, and a nurse unexpectedly offered to brush my teeth in the middle of the night.
It was such a wonderful experience – it made me feel cared for, revitalized, and truly human. I really appreciated that nurse, and I’m sure I thanked her then, though I don’t know who she was. She’s one of the many healthcare workers who quietly do so much without getting the recognition they deserve.
Vanessa hosted the awards ceremony, honoring Gloria Hunniford for her many years of work raising money and speaking up for cancer patients and their families.
Kamran and Aisha Abdus-Samad were also honored for their incredible dedication. For more than ten years, they’ve welcomed children with special needs into their home every weekend, providing much-needed breaks for their parents.
Dr. Hilary Jones honored Carmela Chillery Watson for her amazing fundraising work for Muscular Dystrophy research and support. At only 11 years old, Carmela has impressively raised over £400,000 through challenging events and by inspiring others.
Bobby Norris from *TOWIE* publicly praised his friend Tina Malone, who received an award for her advocacy work supporting military veterans with PTSD. This work is especially meaningful because Tina’s husband, a veteran himself, tragically died by suicide after not receiving adequate support.
Sheridan Smith fondly remembered Ann Ming, whom she played in the ITV drama I Fought the Law. Ann dedicated 17 years to fighting the British legal system to change a rule—called double jeopardy—that had allowed her daughter’s killer to avoid further punishment.
