Alyvia Alyn Lind plays Leila in the new Netflix series, *Wayward*. The show centers on Leila and her best friend, Abbie (Sydney Topliffe), as they navigate life at Tall Pines Academy, a troubled correctional facility. The facility and its treatment methods are far from helpful or positive.
The show features Toni Collette as Evelyn and was initially planned as a one-time story. But it ended with several unresolved plotlines, and viewers are eagerly hoping for a second season, though it hasn’t been officially announced yet.
I recently came across a really interesting interview with Alyvia Alyn Lind, who you probably know from the show *Chucky*. She chatted with Russ Milheim from TopMob about that crazy season finale, and she even shared what she’s hoping to see happen in Season 2. It was a fun peek behind the scenes!
Lind shared that she’s excited about future opportunities and believes Leila has a lot of potential paths she could take.
The actress discussed Leila’s decision to go back to Tall Pines Academy at the season’s end, whether she thinks Leila was responsible for her sister’s death, and the possibility of a romance between Leila and Abbie. You can find her complete statements further down.
Wayward is now streaming on Netflix.
Wayward Star Alyvia Alyn Lind on Her Season 2 Hopes

“There Are So Many Different Possibilities for Leila at This Point.”
- TopMob: “For Season 2 of ‘Wayward,’ let’s say hypothetically it happens. So in a hypothetical space here, what do you want to explore with Leila next? Where do you kind of see her going? Or, just generally, what do you want to dive deeper into with that character?”
As a fan, I’m really excited about all the directions they could take with Leila’s character. I’d be fascinated to see her transform into someone truly terrifying, like a full-on villain. Honestly, I’m so curious about what happens after the leap! Will she end up like a strange, almost catatonic version of Stacey, or will she be more like Laura – still seemingly normal and sweet, but with something unsettling and different about her energy? I have no idea, and that’s what makes it so interesting!
Ultimately, it’s up to Mae [Martin] to decide about a second season. But if Mae chooses to write it and continue the story, I think they’d do a fantastic job. Just getting to reprise the character would be incredible.
Lind hasn’t received any updates about Season 2, and she says the show’s creators don’t share information with her.
I still haven’t received any updates. I’m not being kept in the loop… If there are future opportunities with this project, I’d really like to be involved. I think this story is very important, and I’m eager to see how Mae develops it. The entire cast and crew are fantastic, so I’m definitely interested in anything related to this project.
Alyvia Alyn Lind Explains Leila’s Final Choice In Season 1

“She’s Never Really Felt That Sense of Home.”
- TopMob: Obviously, at the end, Leila decides that she’s going to leave this prison escape and go back to Tall Pines. What’s going through her head in that moment when she’s like, ‘I can’t do this. I need what they have to offer?’
Alyvia Alyn Lind explained that her character hasn’t really experienced a true sense of belonging or unconditional love. This is because her family has been deeply affected since her sister’s death. On top of that, she’s being told that her closest relationship with Abbie is unhealthy for both of them, which is her greatest worry – she doesn’t want to hurt Abbie. In that moment, she finally starts to see a glimmer of humanity in her difficult situation.
There’s a turning point when the character, Duck, is shown enjoying herself – playing and eating pizza. She starts to think this place might not be so bad after all, and that people here were actually trying to help her. It feels like a moment where she realizes she could be happy and settled if she just tried. She accepts she doesn’t have anywhere else to go and decides to stay, even bringing her friend, Abbie, along, hoping they can both get better. It’s a really sad realization, but also a hopeful one.
- TopMob: “Where does she even return to, though? Is there still going to be a school to go back to?”
I’m honestly lost. Seeing Evelyn so upset was a shock, and we had no idea what was about to happen. It’s possible Laura is involved, or maybe Leila. We just don’t understand what’s going on with Evelyn, and there are so many things we don’t know.
Does Alyvia Alyn Lind Actually Believe Leila Killed Her Sister?

“I Don’t Think That I Could Forgive Leila If She Actually Did Kill Her Sister…”
- TopMob: “When the series comes to a close, Leila is pretty confident that she is directly responsible for killing her own sister. In your own head, is that accurate?”
I don’t believe Leila is the killer, and I’ve told everyone that. What I love about that episode is that it sparks so much discussion and different opinions – there are so many things in the show people can debate. When we were filming it, we talked with the writers and crew about what everyone thought. I personally decided that I wouldn’t be able to forgive Leila if she had killed her sister, and I don’t think it would be something anyone could forgive.
I realized that after a trauma like Leila experienced, memories can become very distorted. Evelyn recognizes this and sees it as a way to manipulate Leila, twisting her thoughts so Leila believes she needs therapy to feel better.
Throughout the episode, both accounts seem to contain some truth. It’s hard to say exactly what happened, but I believe the reality is a combination of the two stories, twisted by Evelyn to appear much more sinister and frightening.
Is There Any Romantic Connection Between Leila and Abbie?

“I Don’t Think There’s Anything Romantic at All…”
- TopMob: “Leila and Abbie’s friendship is central to the show. But I do want to ask, do you feel that there is, was, or will be any romantic spark between those two, or is that very much just friendship driven?”
When asked about a possible romantic connection between Abbie and Layla, Alyvia Alyn Lind said she doesn’t believe there’s anything more than friendship. She explained that a lot of the show is open to viewers’ interpretations, but in her opinion, the two characters are simply best friends.
I believe the bond you have with a best friend can sometimes be even deeper than romantic love. That’s because, unlike a relationship where you might worry about breaking up, a best friendship feels like a lifelong commitment. You love and accept each other genuinely and intensely, and that connection is especially powerful when you’re young.
Those connections feel incredibly powerful and genuine. While there’s definitely no romantic element, this relationship is exceptionally strong – possibly even stronger than any romantic feelings Leila has ever experienced.
- TopMob: “When you guys were navigating the show and your performances, was there ever any purposeful kind of thought or direction into making sure that you didn’t accidentally put signs out there that maybe that was the case?”
Honestly, it wasn’t like we *tried* to make our chemistry seem like something it wasn’t. Sydney and I just clicked instantly and became really close friends off camera. That genuine connection we had in real life naturally came across when we were filming. If viewers interpret that as something romantic, that’s totally fine, but what I really love is that our characters could have such a strong bond without needing a romantic connection. It’s really special to see a friendship that powerful portrayed on screen.
The Netflix series *Black Rabbit*, featuring Jason Bateman and Jude Law, also concluded with a truly memorable season finale.
