Stephen Graham’s dark thriller that will “have you utterly gripped” lands 100% Rotten Tomatoes score

Don’t mistake this *Good Boy* for other recent films with the same name – one’s a supernatural movie about dogs, and another is a horror thriller from 2022. What to Read Next

This is what critics have said about the upcoming film…

Digital Spy

You won’t be worrying about a dog’s life here, but *Good Boy* is still a truly captivating and unusual thriller. It’s powerfully acted, featuring brilliant performances from Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough, and a standout performance from Anson Boon, known from *MobLand*. It’s unlike anything else you’ll see this year.

Guardian

There’s a distinctly stage-like quality to *Good Boy* – it feels like a play that could easily be performed in London’s West End. The performances are key, though; Graham and Riseborough brilliantly capture the subtle unpleasantness of their characters, and a less talented cast wouldn’t have the same impact.

London Evening Standard

The basic idea behind *Good Boy* is disturbing and only gets more unsettling, but that darkness is actually part of what makes it work. The film has a very distinct and unusual tone.

Collider

For most of the film, *Good Boy* doesn’t reveal much about its story, but the ending shows that this was because the story wasn’t very compelling to begin with.

Screen International

This strange but beautifully crafted story, reminiscent of gothic tales, offers a hopeful message: even in the most difficult circumstances, people can find healing, and genuine liberation comes from learning to trust.

The Wrap

The film *Good Boy* truly shines thanks to the powerful performances of Graham and Boon, who portray characters at very different stages of recovery and rehabilitation.

Okay, so the movie’s about this guy, Tommy, he’s 19 and a total troublemaker – think drugs, parties, getting into fights, the whole nine yards. The trailer shows him out with his friends, really going wild, and then he somehow gets separated and… kidnapped? It looks like someone grabs him out of nowhere, and that’s where things get crazy.

Look, I’ve played characters who *do* bad things before, no problem. But this… this was different. I woke up chained in the basement of this totally normal-looking suburban house, and it just… messed me up. This family – Chris, his wife Kathryn who seemed almost like a ghost, and their kid Jonathan – they were the ones who put me there, and I was furious and honestly, terrified. It wasn’t just the chains, it was the whole situation. It was deeply unsettling.

The family tries to fix Tommy’s bad behavior, using manipulative tactics and giving him no choice but to either fall in line or run away.

Good Boy does not have a UK release date yet, but is expected to launch in early 2026.
