It’s Halloween season, and while many people love watching scary movies, plenty of others want to enjoy the spooky vibes without the frights. Luckily, a perfect non-horror option is currently streaming! In fact, lots of people are already watching it this month to get into the Halloween spirit. This isn’t a horror film that just happens to be mild, or a dark and atmospheric movie – it’s the classic, and appropriately named, Scary Movie, which offers all the Halloween fun without the scares.
Despite being a horror parody, the 2002 film *Scary Movie* is surprisingly popular on Peacock, currently ranking as the ninth most-watched movie on the platform. Many consider it the best of the early 2000s spoof films, which also included titles like *Superhero Movie* and *Epic Movie*. While several *Scary Movie* sequels followed, the original stood out for its clever and over-the-top humor, playfully mocking horror tropes and early 2000s pop culture. In fact, the plot is so secondary to the gags that even the official synopsis doesn’t bother to explain what the movie is about!
Scary Movie deliberately goes over the top with its humor, making fun of movies that *already* parody other things. It doesn’t hold back, poking fun at iconic scenes and memorable moments from recent hits like Scream, The Sixth Sense, The Matrix, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and The Blair Witch Project. Beyond those, it also lampoons every cliché it can find in teen movies, regardless of the specific type.
The comedy film *Scary Movie* was created by brothers Marlon and Shawn Wayans, and directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans. Shawn and Marlon Wayans also starred as the main characters, alongside a cast including Cheri Oteri, Shannon Elizabeth, Anna Faris, Regina Hall, and Jon Abrahams. When released in 2000, the film received mixed reviews, earning a 51% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite this, *Scary Movie* became a cult classic, gaining a dedicated fanbase. Many fans appreciate it as a fun alternative to traditional horror, with one Rotten Tomatoes user calling it “arguably the best Halloween movie for people who hate horror films.” It’s become a beloved Halloween tradition, similar to how *Die Hard* is often watched during Christmas.
Another ‘Scary Movie’ Is On the Way (Finally!)

Dimension Films
People are talking about the *Scary Movie* franchise again, and it’s not just because of Halloween! After a poorly received fifth film (*Scary Movie 5*, with only a 4% rating on Rotten Tomatoes) twelve years ago, a sixth movie is in the works. The original stars – Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans, and Keenan Ivory Wayans – are all set to return.
The next *Scary Movie*, number 6, is planned to come out in 2026. Marlon Wayans recently shared that the film will poke fun at some popular horror movies that have come out recently, hinting at what viewers can expect.
As a huge horror fan, I’m really excited about all the possibilities! There’s so much great material to work with. I’m thinking films like *I Know What You Did Last Summer*, the *Scream* series, *Heretic*, and more recent hits like *Longlegs*, *Get Out*, and *Nope* all offer a lot of inspiration. We’re planning to really explore the genre – there are just so many fantastic films out there, and even something like *Sinners* catches my eye!
