Ryan Adams has publicly apologized after receiving criticism for a messy and disorganized concert in Melbourne. During the apology, he also made a critical comment about his former wife, Mandy Moore.
The American singer-songwriter unexpectedly stopped his concert at Hamer Hall on Sunday evening following a series of strange outbursts, unfinished songs, and heated arguments with both the audience and venue employees.
People shared their experiences on Reddit, describing the concert as a failure. They said Adams left the stage during the performance and was upset about bright camera flashes from the audience.
One viewer said the performance started well, but the speaker gradually became overly talkative, disorganized, and negative towards Mandy.
Someone else reported that the Melbourne show was a disaster. The performer scolded the ushers for not managing the flashing lights, which were triggering seizures. He even left the stage, saying he’d return only when the staff could do their jobs properly. He did come back for the second set, promising it would be the best ever to make up for his earlier outburst. During the set, he lay on stage and started talking incoherently about Lasseter’s Reef.
On Monday night, Adams responded to criticism online, saying he was very ashamed of how he acted. He explained that his outbursts on stage were caused by seizures brought on by the lights.

‘I am so wildly embarrassed and disappointed about last night,’ Adams wrote.
When I’m performing on stage, phone camera flashes in the dark are completely unexpected. It’s impossible to anticipate them because the environment is so dark.
As a longtime fan, it’s heartbreaking to hear him describe what happens when things get overwhelming. He explained that after a while, with everything happening at once, he experiences a kind of visual seizure. It completely disorients him – he loses track of where he is, even forgets what his guitar is, and just feels total panic.
He explained that the ‘fight or flight’ response really hit home for him. He desperately wanted to avoid having a seizure. He shared that he unfortunately experienced this several times during a performance in front of a large audience of 2,500 people, which was deeply upsetting because he was really enjoying the show.
He went on to say he loved everyone and apologized, emphasizing that they hadn’t done anything wrong by taking photos or using flash. He explained he’s dealt with this issue his whole life and it’s difficult because he loves performing live, but he can’t play music with his eyes closed for the entire show.
Taylor Goldsmith’s comments about his ex-wife, Mandy Moore, were seen by many fans as negative and disorganized, and they disrupted what had been a good concert. His remarks seemed to worsen the situation.

His sudden angry words brought attention back to the couple’s difficult relationship, which ended in a very public divorce in 2016 after they had been married for seven years.
Arts Centre Melbourne confirmed the concert was organized by TEG MJR, and they’ve passed all audience complaints on to the promoter for resolution.
Arts Centre Melbourne is responding to customer feedback from Sunday night and has shared complaints with the event promoter. They’ve asked anyone wanting a refund to get in touch with the event presenter directly.
Ryan Adams is on tour in Australia and New Zealand, marking 25 years since the release of his first solo album, Heartbreaker.
