Out now! Netflix’s hit returning thriller is back streaming now after near-perfect last season

The popular Netflix thriller, *The Diplomat*, starring Keri Russell, has returned for a new season and is currently available to stream.

After a highly successful first season—with a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 46 reviews—Russell returns as Katherine “Kate” Wyler, the central ambassador character.

In the first season, Kate began her career as the US ambassador to the UK. She balanced the demands of her important position with her personal goals and a difficult marriage to diplomat Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell).

In season 3, Kate finds herself working alongside Grace Penn (Allison Janney), a former Vice President and President of the United States.

Kate had previously claimed Grace was planning a terrorist attack and also revealed she was interested in becoming Vice President.

Hal is working hard to get Kate the vice presidential nomination. Throughout this, he maintains a complex friendship with British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison and a somewhat unclear relationship with First Gentleman Todd Penn.

Rory Kinnear will reprise his role as British Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge in season 3, alongside Ali Ahn as CIA station chief Eidra Park and Ato Essandoh as Stuart Heyford.

Critics loved the second season, especially how it tackled international issues with a funny, though not always realistic, approach that kept viewers entertained.

According to The Daily Beast, even though *The Diplomat* focuses on the serious business of diplomacy, it’s also genuinely entertaining, which is a key reason for its popularity. They compare it to the relationship between *Grey’s Anatomy* and *ER*, suggesting *The Diplomat* offers a similar, more dramatic take on the world of *The West Wing*.

Both *USA Today* and *The Diplomat* acknowledged that the show isn’t a true reflection of how international relations actually work, but they agreed it’s an enjoyable and captivating watch.

Debora Cahn created this series. She’s also known for her work as a writer and executive producer on the last two seasons of the political drama *Homeland*, starring Claire Danes.

Ahead of season 3, The Diplomat has been renewed for a fourth instalment at Netflix.

Season 4 will feature continued rivalry between the Wyler and Penn families, with Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford both returning as main cast members.

Season three of The Diplomat arrives on Netflix on October 16th. You can already watch seasons one and two on the streaming service.
