NBC News Group laid off 150 employees on Wednesday as traditional television struggles financially.
For months, NBC has been preparing for layoffs due to falling TV viewership and advertising income, which haven’t been fully compensated by growth in its online platforms.
As more people switch to streaming services, traditional media companies are facing financial challenges, resulting in job losses and reduced budgets.
I reached out to NBC News about the recent reports of layoffs affecting shows like “Today,” “NBC Nightly News,” and “Dateline,” but they didn’t offer any comment. It’s frustrating when networks stay silent on things like this, honestly.
The staff reductions are also due to the separation of MSNBC and CNBC from NBC News. As of last week, NBC News stopped sharing resources with these networks, which are now moving into a new organization called Versant. Some long-time NBC News employees have chosen to transfer to MSNBC, which is being rebranded as MS NOW.

The cable news channel, currently part of NBC News, will rebrand as MS NOW when it becomes independent later this year.
Versant is a new company that now includes many of Comcast’s popular cable channels, like USA Network, Golf Channel, CNBC, and MSNBC. Comcast is creating this separate company because it thinks these channels will struggle as more people cancel traditional cable, and they’re negatively impacting Comcast’s overall value.
While some jobs are being eliminated, the company plans to shift resources to strengthen its digital platforms. Employees who are losing their positions are being encouraged to apply for the 140 open roles available within NBC News Group.
NBC News Group Chairman Cesar Conde announced that the company will launch a new subscription streaming service later this year, though specific details haven’t been released yet. They currently offer NBC News Now, which is a free streaming channel supported by advertisements.
More layoffs are anticipated at TV news organizations before the year is over. CBS News is likely to see substantial staff reductions after Paramount merges with Skydance Media.
In March, Walt Disney Co., the parent company of ABC News, cut staff by 6% across the ABC TV network. This came after a previous round of layoffs in October 2024, which affected 40 news employees.
