Marvel Studios’ efforts to create a Blade movie for the Marvel Cinematic Universe have become well-known, but unfortunately for all the wrong reasons. Announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, the film starring Mahershala Ali as the vampire hunter Blade has faced numerous changes in writers and directors, and hasn’t made significant progress. Despite these setbacks, the actress is still interested in appearing in the movie when it finally moves forward with production.
Jenna Ortega recently told *Elle* that she’s still planning to star in the upcoming *Blade* movie, potentially as the villain Lilith. She feels the delay in production is a good thing, explaining that the filmmakers are taking the time needed to get the movie right.
Kevin Feige has repeatedly addressed questions about the status of the *Blade* movie. He explained to the press in July:
We were hesitant to jump into a full-blown vampire-hunting storyline with a leather costume. While a script can always be improved during filming, we didn’t think we could successfully pull that off with Blade. We didn’t want to disappoint Mahershala [Ali] or ourselves by trying something we weren’t confident about.
The Seemingly Impossible Task of Resurrecting Blade

Blade has shown up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe a couple of times – once with Wesley Snipes in *Deadpool & Wolverine*, and as an animated character in *Marvel Zombies*. However, the only time we’ve actually *heard* the new version of Blade is through a voice cameo by Mahershala Ali at the end of *Eternals*.
Ever since the initial announcement in 2021, Marvel has reportedly gone through four different versions of a Blade movie that didn’t quite work out. One attempt was a period piece set in the 1930s, but it was so similar to the Warner Bros. film *Sinners* that costumes originally designed for the Marvel movie ended up being used in *Sinners* instead.
Recent news about the *Blade* movie hasn’t been great. It doesn’t currently have a release date, and with Marvel prioritizing the next *Avengers* films, the introduction of the X-Men, and the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga, it’s unclear how *Blade* will fit into the studio’s plans.
As a big Marvel fan, I always expect Kevin Feige to have a grand plan unfolding, and while it felt like the *Blade* movie might be losing its footing, I was reminded of how well *Werewolf by Night* did with that ‘Marvel Spotlight’ approach. Honestly, sometimes it’s great to see a story that doesn’t *have* to fit neatly into the main timeline – and *Blade* could really benefit from that. I’ve heard whispers about a *Midnight Suns* team-up being the ultimate goal for the more mystical side of the MCU, and that makes me think they won’t just drop *Blade* altogether. We fans just need to practice a lot of patience, that’s all!
