The BBC announced the actors who will star in *The Split Up*, a new six-episode series based on *The Split*. Sanjeev Bhaskar, who appears alongside Nicola Walker in *Unforgotten*, will be one of the main stars, and many other well-known actors will also appear in recurring or one-off roles.
The series moves to Manchester and centers on Kishan Law, a family-run divorce law firm with British South Asian roots. Dhruv, played by Bhaskar, currently leads the firm, but his daughter, Aria (played by Ritu Arya from *The Umbrella Academy*), is being prepared to take over the business.
With Aria grieving the loss of her mother, Dhruv is now questioning whether this is the best moment to step down. This difficult time also creates tension between Aria and her fiancé, Neal, especially when a past love interest unexpectedly appears.
What to Read Next
Aria, along with her siblings Maya and Kav, is dealing with family issues and trying to figure out how to live a life that’s true to herself.
The show will star Bhaskar and Arya, along with Aysha Kala (known from Virdee), Arian Nik (from Film Club), Mawaan Rizwan (of Juice), Sindhu Vee (from Matilda the Musical), Danny Ashok (of Dinosaur), and comedy legends Lenny Henry and Jane Horrocks.
Abi Morgan, the creator of both the original series and this new show, said she was thrilled to build on what audiences loved about *The Split* and give a new generation of British South Asian actors and writers a chance to shine. She praised lead writer Ursula Rani Sarma for beautifully bringing to life a new family of complex lawyers dealing with the challenges of work and personal life.
“I hope audiences will take it to their hearts.”
I’ve been a huge fan of *The Split* and Abi Morgan’s work for ages, so getting the chance to write *The Split Up* was amazing! As someone who really cares about seeing diverse stories, it’s a total dream come true to put a modern British South Asian family front and center.
Having a wide range of perspectives helps us learn and grow, makes our stories more interesting, and truly represents who we are as a society. We’re excited to see our talented actors, Ritu and Sanjeev, play the Kishan family. We can’t wait for audiences to meet them and experience their story.
The Split Up has just begun filming. It does not currently have a release date.
