James Gunn Reveals The DCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy Replacement Movie

In a recent interview, James Gunn, head of DC Studios, shared which DC Universe (DCU) project he envisions as similar to his work on *Guardians of the Galaxy*. Before leading DC, Gunn was a key figure at Marvel Studios, creating the popular and highly-rated *Guardians of the Galaxy* trilogy. Now at Warner Bros., he’s building a new shared universe for DC Comics. While Gunn’s influence is already apparent in the DCU, fans haven’t yet experienced a project that captures the same spirit as *Guardians*. That could be about to change.

James Gunn says the upcoming *Supergirl* movie will feel the most like a *Guardians of the Galaxy* film among all the projects planned for the DC Universe. He told Rolling Stone after the *Peacemaker* Season 2 finale that *Supergirl* is essentially a space adventure in the same vein as *Guardians*.

Will the events of this storyline carry over into other series like ‘Lanterns’ and ‘Supergirl’? Or is this a self-contained arc specific to this story, and not part of a bigger, ongoing narrative?

Those stories were always planned and integrated into the larger narrative from the beginning. While they contribute to the overall story, they also stand alone – ‘Supergirl’ is a space adventure similar to ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ and ‘Lanterns’ has its own unique focus. We’re creating a vast, interconnected world, and these stories will occasionally intersect, but sometimes they simply offer a glimpse into different corners of that world.

I’m really excited about Craig Gillespie’s next film, coming out in 2026! He directed *I, Tonya*, which was fantastic, and this new one is apparently going to take the DC Universe into space for the first time. It’s a revenge story set among the stars, and honestly, it sounds like it’s going to have a similar vibe to *Guardians of the Galaxy* – which is definitely a good thing in my book!

The upcoming *Supergirl* series will share another similarity with *Guardians of the Galaxy*: it will also use popular, licensed music. However, it’s currently unknown how much music will be featured.

With the new ‘Supergirl’ movie and the ‘Lanterns’ show on HBO Max coming up, are you considering using music in a similar way to how you’ve approached it in other projects?

Both of those projects have songs, but honestly, whether something has a song in it doesn’t really matter to me. I see film scores as the main thing – like the ‘Superman’ score. That one song ended up being a surprisingly big hit, especially considering it wasn’t from a Wig Wam project. ‘Come and Get Your Love’ from the first ‘Guardians’ is a good example. Everyone already knew that song, but the movie gave it a new life and a fresh perspective.

The movie *Supergirl* will be released in theaters on June 26, 2026. Directed by Craig Gillespie, the film stars Milly Alcock (known for *House of the Dragon*) as Kara Zor-El, Superman’s powerful cousin. The story follows Kara, in her twenties, as she undertakes a dangerous, galaxy-spanning mission driven by a desire for revenge. The cast also includes Matthias Schoenaerts, Jason Momoa, and Eve Ridley.

How Else Will Supergirl Be Like Guardians of the Galaxy?

The upcoming *Supergirl* movie isn’t just DC Studios’ first venture into outer space and its use of popular licensed music; these elements combined truly position it as a successor to *Guardians of the Galaxy*.

The film’s main character is also complex and makes mistakes, similar to how Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord is portrayed in the *Guardians of the Galaxy* movies.

When Chris Pratt first played the leader of the Guardians in 2014, his character wasn’t a perfect hero. Similarly, the new Supergirl, played by Milly Alcock, won’t be a flawless character when her solo movie comes out next year.

I recently read an interview with James Gunn from July 2025 where he described the new DCU Supergirl as delightfully flawed – basically, a bit of a mess! He said she’s going to have some real problems to deal with, which I think is fantastic. It makes her much more relatable, you know? We actually got a little hint of this during the *Superman* movie – her cousin showed up at the end, and let’s just say she wasn’t exactly on her best behavior after having a few drinks!

Becoming the Woman of Tomorrow won’t be easy for Supergirl – it will be a challenging journey, similar to what Star-Lord and the Guardians experienced in the first *Guardians of the Galaxy* movie. However, she’ll make it, still keeping her strong personality but with a greater focus on helping others. You can find more details about the *Supergirl* storyline here.
