A new *Mortal Kombat* movie is reportedly being planned, hinting at a larger expansion of the franchise after the next sequel is released. Details are still scarce, but it sounds like the studio wants to build out the *Mortal Kombat* universe beyond just the immediate next film.
Mortal Kombat 3 in works with Jeremy Slater potentially returning as screenwriter
New Line Cinema is working on a third Mortal Kombat movie, and Jeremy Slater – who wrote and produced the second film – is likely to return as the screenwriter. Slater announced the project at New York Comic Con. Warner Bros. is still optimistic about the sequel, but it’s been delayed – it will now be released on May 15, 2026, instead of October 24, 2025.
As a huge cinema fan, I was blown away to hear that the red-band trailer for Mortal Kombat 2 racked up a massive 107 million views worldwide in just 24 hours – apparently, that’s a new record! I’m also really excited to hear that Todd Garner is returning to produce the third film. The team behind the second movie was fantastic – including producers James Wan, Toby Emmerich, E. Bennett Walsh, and director Simon McQuoid, who’s been at the helm for both films so far. Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Slater, and Lawrence Kasanoff all lent their expertise as executive producers, too. Hopefully, they can bring the same magic to the next installment!
The Mortal Kombat movies are based on the popular video game series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias in 1992. The films center around martial arts competitions that determine the destiny of different worlds, including Earthrealm and Outworld, and showcase iconic fighters like Liu Kang, Raiden, Scorpion, and Sonya Blade.
The 2021 Mortal Kombat movie made over $84 million globally, even though it was released in theaters and on HBO Max at the same time during the pandemic. The sequel will be shown in theaters exclusively and will continue the story from the first film. Several original cast members are returning, including Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Tadanobu Asano, Chin Han, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada. Joining them will be new actors Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Tati Gabrielle, and Martyn Ford.
Slater has worked on popular projects like Moon Knight, The Umbrella Academy, Death Note, Fantastic Four, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
