Carole Bayer Sager, a close friend of Diane Keaton, is sharing memories of their last time together, following Keaton’s passing on Saturday at the age of 79.
The songwriter behind Keaton’s 2024 holiday hit, ‘First Christmas,’ recently told People magazine that he noticed a significant weight loss when he saw her a few weeks ago. He described her as being very thin.
Sager mentioned she hadn’t seen Keaton as much recently, as the actor spent several months in Palm Springs after the wildfires in Los Angeles back in January.
She said she needed to travel to Palm Springs because water damage had affected the interior of her home, requiring a thorough cleanup.
She was gone for a while, and when she returned, I was really surprised by how much weight she had lost.
And the musician remembered of her late friend as ‘a magic light for everyone.’

She gushed, ‘I just loved her. She was so special, she just lit up a room with her energy.
She was cheerful and energetic, constantly snapping pictures of her surroundings. A naturally creative person, she was always making something new.
Sager paid tribute to Keaton on Saturday on Instagram following the news of her death.
She shared a happy photo of the famous actress and wrote a heartfelt message: ‘My dearest friend, I’ll miss you terribly. May you rest in peace. I love you more than words can say.’
She posted a clip from their recording session last December, along with a message saying, ‘Our first Christmas song, written for Diane Keaton with @jonasmyrin. The lyrics, ‘Whoever dreams,’ are for anyone who needs them. x.’
Sager told People, ‘She so loved recording this song. She was almost childlike about it.’
I remembered thinking she was incredibly genuine while singing. It felt completely natural, like she was truly living the song, which makes sense because she’s a talented actress.
‘And then she’d start to cry when she was singing it. But she did such a beautiful job.’

Sager additionally praised Keaton’s one-of-a-kind style.
A longtime friend described her as always dressing in a style reminiscent of the movie *Annie Hall*.
The songwriter explained that she always wore her signature style – hats, jackets, loose-fitting pants, and belts. She essentially created her own unique fashion statement and became a style icon because of it.
According to a family representative, the Oscar-winning actress died in California on Saturday.
Her loved ones have requested privacy as they mourn her loss.
Buster Keaton didn’t have any children of his own, but he adopted two: a daughter named Dexter, who is now 29, and a son named Duke, who is 25.
