Gavin & Stacey’s unseen fishing trip moment that never made it to air revealed

Since it first aired in 2007, *Gavin & Stacey* has left fans wondering about one thing: what exactly happened on that fishing trip?

Despite three seasons and three Christmas specials, a key mystery remains unsolved. James Corden and Ruth Jones have revealed that a crucial scene explaining it was cut from the third season.

James Corden told the *Daily Star* about a lost scene showing what happened between the characters Bryn, played by Rob Brydon, and Jason, played by Robert Wilfort.

He explained that they had written an entire scene about Jason entering Bryn’s house. Bryn had been cleaning out his attic and discovered an old camcorder tape labeled ‘The fishing trip’.

The plan was to play the tape, which was filmed on a camcorder. But right when you expect something to happen, the tape gets distorted and jammed in the player.

As a fan, I’ve been totally hooked by this mystery for ages, and it’s wild how many different theories people have come up with! The show’s creator, Jones, has said she’s noticed it too – fans are always casually mentioning their ideas, and some of them are just…out there! She says it’s amazing and honestly makes you wonder where people come up with this stuff!

It was seriously spooky, honestly! If anyone ever asks me what went down, I just tell them, ‘No clue, wasn’t even there!’

Last Christmas, the popular show Gavin & Stacey returned for a special holiday episode. Though promoted as the last one, it almost revealed what happened on the infamous fishing trip. The story focused on Dave Coaches (Steffan Rhodri) having to be honest with his girlfriend, Gwen (Melanie Walters).

He started his story, saying, “I heard it was really cold. The tent was already set up, but the sun had gone down. There was a bright fire going, and soup was cooking on the stove…” He stopped as the smoke alarm went off, ending the moment.

At a preview of the episode, Robert Wilfort explained that the mystery of what happens on the fishing trip is intentional. He stated, ‘The point has always been that we *don’t* reveal what goes on during the fishing trip!’

I know it sounds strange, but the humor has always come from the fact that we don’t know what it is, and that’s what makes it funny. I was glad we kept it a mystery, because honestly, we still have no idea what it actually is.

All episodes of Gavin & Stacey are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
