The Most Anticipated Action Video Game Movie of 2026 Is Already Getting Another Sequel

Although fans will have to wait until next year for the sequel to the 2021 *Mortal Kombat* reboot, a third movie is already being planned. At New York Comic Con, Jeremy Slater shared his hopes to write more deadly fights and tournaments for *Mortal Kombat III*.

While the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie didn’t earn huge profits – likely because it came out during the Covid-19 pandemic – it performed well enough to justify a follow-up. The sequel was initially planned for release this month, but in September, fans learned it had been delayed until May 2026.

We don’t yet know the plot of the new *Mortal Kombat III* movie, but it’s expected to bring back many familiar characters. This likely includes Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, and potentially Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero and Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, along with other established favorites.

Warner Bros. seems to be rushing into a new *Mortal Kombat* movie before the second one even comes out. This likely stems from the incredible response to the *Mortal Kombat II* trailer, which broke records with over 107 million views in just 24 hours. That’s an impressive number, especially considering it wasn’t tied to a major event, and clearly shows there’s a huge demand for more *Mortal Kombat* content.

‘Mortal Kombat II’s Success Can Lead to Many More Projects

Often, movies get made because fans really want them, and a second *Mortal Kombat* film might be a good example. While the first movie wasn’t a huge hit, the sequel has potential. Releasing it in May 2026 could be a smart strategy, allowing it to be a summer blockbuster without going head-to-head with big films like *Supergirl* and *Spider-Man: Brand New Day* that are coming out shortly after.

The news that *Mortal Kombat III* is in development isn’t a huge shock, considering producer Todd Garner mentioned it back in August, stating:

We definitely want to continue the Mortal Kombat story beyond this film. We have future plans for the characters and the franchise as a whole. We intentionally didn’t reveal everything in this movie so we have plenty of room to grow and develop these characters in future installments, which is how movie franchises typically work.

Ed Boon hinted at possible spin-offs and a sequel if *Mortal Kombat II* is successful. However, Warner Bros. seems confident the film is already a hit and is eager to move forward with another installment regardless. If viewers enjoy it, we could be seeing more *Mortal Kombat* action in the future.
