HBO Max is releasing a new prequel to *It*, called *Welcome to Derry*, and Stephen King fans are excited to see how the story of the terrifying creature that haunts Derry began. The show is set in 1962 and the trailers and posters have a vintage look to match the era. However, after HBO shared these posters online, some viewers wondered if artificial intelligence was used to create them.
Dread Central reports that the new retro posters are getting a lot of criticism. The posters are designed to look like old advertisements from the 1960s, featuring things like slingshots, Corn Flakes, and a local movie theater from the town of Derry. People on social media platforms like Instagram and Reddit have been sharing their thoughts, and most haven’t been positive.
People’s reactions to the images vary, with some thrilled by the intricate details and others questioning their quality. One X user, @alanenserio, praised the subtle details, pointing out how initially unsettling elements like stripes resembling blood and a character’s wide-open mouth – reminiscent of Pennywise – go unnoticed. Meanwhile, @HollHox wondered on X if the posters were intentionally poorly made or generated by AI. On Reddit, user “mustnttelllies” further discussed these details.
I was unsure at first, but now I definitely see the issues. The way the seat cushions are divided feels off, and the gap between Pennywise’s ring and his pinky finger is noticeably large. Plus, the popcorn on the left side seems to be floating, and the drink lid is strangely twisted. Her shoe buckles are positioned incorrectly, but at least his socks match his pants – and he’s missing fingernails.
User @anarkerry used platform X to deny claims that the work was created by AI, and clarified who designed it.
A recent post on X sparked a lot of accusations, with many people claiming HBO used artificial intelligence to create the images.
When and Where to Stream ‘It: Welcome to Derry’
The new series, *Welcome to Derry*, will debut on HBO Max and other streaming platforms on October 26, 2025. New episodes will be released each week. It will take over the Sunday night timeslot currently held by the crime series *Task*.
I’m really excited about this series! Andy Muschietti directed most of the episodes, and the writing team is fantastic – it includes Jason Fuchs, who also produced It, along with Austin Guzman and Brad Caleb Kane. It’s currently planned as one season with eight episodes, and the finale is scheduled for December 14th. I can’t wait!
