Marvel Studios faces a huge challenge completing its Multiverse Saga with the upcoming films, *Avengers: Doomsday* and *Avengers: Secret Wars*. The recently announced cast for *Doomsday* is incredibly impressive, bringing back popular heroes like Thor, Captain America (Sam Wilson), and Loki. It also introduces the Fantastic Four and several characters from the X-Men, originally from Fox. All these heroes will confront Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, and while the large cast is exciting, it also raises questions about how so many characters will be effectively used.
The biggest challenge is making sure every character feels important without overcrowding the story – even a movie like *Avengers: Infinity War* sometimes struggled with this. To make *Avengers: Secret Wars* a truly epic and satisfying conclusion, the studio should avoid the urge to include *every* hero in the first film. Saving some popular and powerful characters for the second part of this two-movie finale would be a smart move.
Marvel Should Save These Heroes for Avengers: Secret Wars
Spider-Man (Tom Holland)

Fans noticed Tom Holland’s Spider-Man wasn’t included in the announced cast of Avengers: Doomsday, despite some rumors suggesting he might be. His story ended with Spider-Man: No Way Home by resetting him as a local hero starting over, a direction that will continue in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Bringing him back into a massive, multiversal battle right now would undo the meaningful conclusion of his last movie and distract from the main characters and storyline of Doomsday.
Look, as a critic, I’ve been thinking about Spider-Man, and holding him back until *Secret Wars* could be a brilliant move for the MCU. It’s not just about having another hero show up; it’s about giving Peter Parker a genuinely impactful story. Imagine him as a forgotten hero, struggling to find his place again, and then being thrust into a situation where *he’s* the last chance to fix everything when reality itself is falling apart. That’s a story with weight, and it could make his return truly special.
Seeing him appear in *Secret Wars* – maybe as a hero who remembers events like the Illuminati from the original comics – would be a truly amazing moment, solidifying his place as a key character in the MCU after the Multiverse Saga.
Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff)

After the events of *Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness*, it’s unclear what happened to Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch, as she seemingly sacrificed herself to destroy the Darkhold. Actress Elizabeth Olsen has confirmed she won’t be appearing in *Avengers: Doomsday*. Although many fans will be upset, this is actually a good thing creatively. Wanda is incredibly powerful within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and including her in *Doomsday* would either make the conflict too simple or force the filmmakers to come up with unlikely reasons to keep her from fully participating.
Scarlet Witch’s full potential and opportunity for growth are best saved for the biggest story Marvel is building towards. Her comic book history shows she’s capable of drastically altering reality – a storyline explored in *WandaVision* with the *House of M* arc. Given the current focus on the Multiverse Saga, her reappearance in *Secret Wars* could be incredibly important.
Wanda’s return to the story needs to be a major event on its own, not just a small part of the initial conflict. Whether she’s brought back to life, saved from the ruins of Mount Wundagore, or plays a key role in stopping Doctor Doom’s plan to remake the world, her reappearance should be significant.
Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch)

Similar to the situation with the Scarlet Witch, Benedict Cumberbatch has confirmed that Doctor Strange won’t appear in *Avengers: Doomsday*. He explained that the character’s story arc simply doesn’t fit with what’s happening in this particular film. This is likely a smart move, as Doctor Strange has been heavily involved in the Multiverse Saga, from *No Way Home* to *Multiverse of Madness*. Another multiversal conflict in *Doomsday* could feel like too much of the same thing.
As a big fan of the *Secret Wars* comics, I always felt Doctor Strange was just as important as Doctor Doom in that storyline. In the 2015 event, Strange actually worked *for* Doom, kind of like his enforcer on this crazy, cobbled-together planet called Battleworld. But, of course, it all came down to him eventually opposing Doom to fix everything and bring reality back to normal.
Saving Doctor Strange for *Secret Wars* creates an exciting and dramatic setup right away. By keeping him out of *Doomsday*, the film gives other characters, like Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), the chance to investigate the Incursions. This builds towards a major showdown between Strange and Doctor Doom in the next film, making it the peak of the entire story.
Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds)

After the huge success of *Deadpool & Wolverine*, fans immediately started wondering if Deadpool would appear in the last two *Avengers* movies. Although some reports hinted at his involvement, Ryan Reynolds wasn’t included in the official cast list for *Avengers: Doomsday*. Interestingly, a location important to Deadpool is still expected to be shown in the film, and Reynolds himself has only made playful, indirect comments about the rumors.
Changing the serious, bleak tone needed for *Doomsday* to fit the raunchy, fast-paced style of *Deadpool* would be a challenge, especially when trying to blend it with the family-friendly *Avengers* brand. It could feel out of place and disrupt the movie’s overall feel.
Deadpool’s greatest strength would be his ability to shake things up when no one expects it. In *Secret Wars*, when reality is falling apart and heroes are struggling, his surprise appearance from a broken multiverse would bring a much-needed boost of energy, humor, and unpredictable abilities.
Kate Bishop (and the Young Avengers)

Over the last few phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a new team of young heroes – the Young Avengers – has been gradually coming together, with members like Kate Bishop, Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel), Riri Williams, and Cassie Lang (Stature). While Riri Williams was included in the cast announcement for *Avengers: Doomsday*, most of the other core Young Avengers members weren’t, which fits with where their stories are heading. Kate Bishop, having only appeared in two live-action projects so far, and the entire Young Avengers team, are still early in their development.
Adding these characters to the already large cast of *Doomsday* would likely reduce them to minor roles, lessening the impact of a potential team-up. Their most exciting moment would be uniting and proving themselves as the next generation of heroes, stepping up after the original Avengers.
The Young Avengers making their debut as a strong, ready-to-fight team during *Secret Wars* would be a really hopeful and impactful moment, showing the next generation taking over. This would be much more meaningful than if they had been defeated early on in *Doomsday*.
Wolverine (Hugh Jackman)

Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine in *Deadpool & Wolverine* is a major highlight of Marvel’s Phase 6. While a recent video has sparked rumors, it’s still unconfirmed whether he’ll also appear in *Doomsday*, and it might not even be necessary for the story. Wolverine is such a powerful and important character that giving him a meaningful role in a movie already filled with so many heroes – both old and new – would be a challenge.
Wolverine is known for being incredibly tough and the best at what he does. If he appeared in *Secret Wars*, a shattered and hopeless world, it would be a major moment. He could become a key member of any group fighting back, or even the last hero remaining from his universe, stranded on Battleworld.
Delaying his entry into the story ensures he’ll become a central, powerful force in the climax. This will be especially important when the main heroes are at their lowest point, offering a surge of strength when they need it most.
