It’s been over fifteen years since the original *Avatar* movie, and the planned sequels are still far from complete. Now, it appears Chris Hemsworth’s action series *Extraction* might take almost as long to fully realize.

Following the success of the second film, a third *Extraction* movie was quickly announced, leading many to expect it soon. However, it now appears that *Extraction 3* is taking longer to develop.
About a year ago, Chris Hemsworth suggested that filming for *Extraction 3* would begin this year, potentially leading to a 2026 release. We’re currently aiming to start filming in 2026, depending on Chris Hemsworth’s availability with the Avengers movies – that schedule is quite complex. If everything works out, we’re hoping for a release sometime in 2027, but I can’t officially confirm those dates just yet.
This situation reminds me of James Cameron talking about *Avatar 2* – that film took over ten years to make! It’s currently unclear if *Extraction 3* will start filming this year, so it’s quite possible the project could be delayed another year.
The biggest challenge seems to be getting *Avengers: Secret Wars* made. Currently scheduled for release in December 2027, production is expected to begin next spring – roughly a year after filming started on *Avengers: Doomsday* – since *Secret Wars* is planned to be released a year after *Doomsday*.
It’s unclear how big of a role Chris Hemsworth will have in the upcoming *Secret Wars* movie, and it’s possible the script isn’t even finished yet. However, a recent comment from Sam Hargrave suggests Hemsworth will appear in the film at all. This isn’t confirmed, as many fans speculate Thor might die in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a possibility Hemsworth hinted at himself.
If Thor continues appearing in Marvel movies, Chris Hemsworth might also be needed for future MCU projects beyond *Secret Wars*. This could push back the production of *Extraction 3* even further. It looks like we’ll have to be patient and wait for updates.
