How Grey’s Anatomy’s “heartbreaking” death will have a lasting impact on the rest of the characters

Major Grey’s Anatomy spoilers follow.

Meg Marinis, the executive producer of *Grey’s Anatomy*, has revealed that a recent, deeply upsetting death on the show will significantly affect the remaining characters as season 22 continues after its surprising start.

The new season began in the US on October 9th, immediately following the dramatic explosion that ended the previous season.

What to Read Next

The season ended with a shocking explosion at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, leaving several doctors trapped inside.

Dr. Monica Beltran, played by Natalie Morales, was injured when an operating light crashed down and broke her pelvis, leaving her unable to move.

Beltran tragically died from internal bleeding after finishing the paediatric surgery she’d begun with Dr. Jules Millin (Adelaide Kane) before the explosion. She guided Dr. Millin through the remaining steps.

Speaking with *Variety*, Marinis explained that Beltran’s death will particularly affect Dr. Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) and Millin, noting it will have a significant impact on Amelia.

She explained that Jules will likely experience some trauma after being in the damaged operating room and dealing with a very stressful event. Seeing Monica’s final moments, in particular, will be a major focus in the next episode.

Marinis hinted at what’s coming up next, explaining that in Episode 2, viewers will see Amelia grappling with intense guilt. She blames herself for even considering performing the initial surgery on Dylan Gatlin, and then for having to operate on him again.

While she was clearly kidnapped and isn’t to blame for what happened, she’s likely to feel responsible for it anyway.

Fans took to social media to express their sadness over Beltran’s death. One user on X wrote, “SHE DESERVED SO MUCH BETTER.” Another fan shared, “I’ll never get over this #greysanatomy.”

One viewer called this a truly heartbreaking moment from the show, and another praised Monica Beltran, saying she had a larger-than-life presence.

Season 21 of Grey’s Anatomy will air on Thursdays at 10 PM Eastern Time on ABC in the United States. If you’re in the UK, you can watch previous seasons on Disney+.
