Be warned: This article contains major spoilers for the Peacemaker Season 2 finale! If you haven’t watched the final episode on HBO Max, proceed with caution.
The season finale of *Peacemaker*, titled “Full Nelson,” was packed with exciting moments – we saw the beginnings of Checkmate, A.R.G.U.S. learn about the dimension Salvation, and Rick Flag Sr. banish Peacemaker there after he killed his son. There’s plenty of material for a third season, but sadly, the show’s creator, James Gunn, doesn’t have good news on that front. Thankfully, Gunn has said he plans to explore another unresolved storyline from Season 2 in the future.

Peacemaker Season 3 Isn’t Happening (For Now)
Okay, let’s just get this out of the way: despite the fact that Peacemaker is now in a really tough spot – stuck on a planet that’s basically a prison for people with powers, and it’s not the safe haven we thought – James Gunn told Deadline there won’t be a third season of the HBO Max show. Apparently, Gunn, who’s now heading up DC Studios with Peter Safran, explained that…
This isn’t just about this one story; it’s about the bigger DC Universe and how things will unfold moving forward. While I’m not ruling anything out completely, our focus right now is on the future of the DCU. This character is central to those plans.
Just because *Peacemaker* Season 3 isn’t currently planned doesn’t rule out the possibility of seeing Christopher Smith return to the DC Universe in the future. When asked about potential appearances by John Cena or other *Peacemaker* cast members in upcoming projects like *Supergirl* or *Man of Tomorrow*, James Gunn remained tight-lipped. It’s disappointing that we likely won’t be getting another season of *Peacemaker* anytime soon, as the characters are so well-developed and deserving of more screen time. While things could change, with James Gunn focusing on other DC projects, fans might have to wait even longer than the three years it took between the first and second seasons for a potential Season 3.

There Are Plans For David Denman’s Keith Smith
I was pretty shocked by what happened last week with Chris, Judomaster, and the escape from Earth-X – it was messy, to say the least. Seeing Adrian Chase kill Auggie Smith was tough, especially finding out this version of Auggie wasn’t so bad despite everything going on over there. And poor Keith Smith, played by David Denman, got seriously hurt. I honestly thought that injury was setting him up to become a villain in Season 3 of *Peacemaker*, but James Gunn has clarified that won’t be happening. However, he also hinted we haven’t seen the last of Keith, which is a relief!
It seems like a major antagonist has emerged, but I’m more focused on developing a larger, overarching storyline—the ‘Salvation’ arc—rather than just focusing on this villain, Keith. I have ideas for what will happen with Keith, but I’m still working out the details and need to ensure everything is feasible. The constant dimension-hopping makes it challenging to bring all the pieces together smoothly. I know the general outcome I want for Keith, but I’m still unsure how to get there.
I’m interested to see where Keith Smith might appear next in the DC Universe, especially since a third season of *Peacemaker* isn’t currently planned. It’s great that James Gunn wants to bring the character back, as I think he deserves more screen time. However, resolving Keith’s storyline with Salvation seems to be the priority, so it might be a while before Gunn decides on a specific role and place for him in the DCU.
With *Peacemaker* Season 2 finished, the next DC television show, *Lanterns*, is expected to debut on HBO in early 2026. *Supergirl* will then arrive in theaters on June 26th, and *Clayface* will follow on September 11th, both in 2026.
