Cynthia Erivo, known for her role in *Wicked*, is taking on a new magical project. She’s set to star in *Bad Fairies*, an upcoming animated musical from Warner Bros. and Locksmith Animation. Erivo has gained recognition for her powerful voice through performances like her Oscar-nominated portrayal of Elphaba in *Wicked* and the upcoming *Wicked: For Good*. This new role will be her first time leading a major animated feature film.
The upcoming film *Bad Fairies*, as reported by *The Wrap*, features a mischievous group of fairies who are causing trouble in their magical world. Cynthia Erivo will voice one of these fairies, Jayne Staplegun, described as a bold and rebellious character who starts a revolution. While it’s unknown what she’s rebelling against or who will join her, the film’s premise suggests she won’t be acting alone. Further details about the cast are expected to be revealed before the movie’s release on May 21, 2027.
Megan Nicole Dong, the creator of the popular animated musical series *Centaurworld* on Netflix, is directing *Bad Fairies*. She’s joined by co-director Olivier Staphylas, known for his work on films like *Puss in Boots* and *Wish Dragon*. The film’s story comes from an original screenplay by Deborah Frances-White, and features original songs written by Tony Award winners Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss. Adding to the musical talent, Isabella “Machine” Summers, from the band Florence + the Machine, is composing the score and also contributing to the songs.
Cynthia Erivo’s ‘Wicked’ Co-Star Is Also Getting Animated

Universal Pictures
Cynthia Erivo isn’t the only star branching out into animation after *Wicked*. Ariana Grande, her co-star, will also lend her voice to an animated musical. She’s working again with the director of *Wicked*, Jon M. Chu, on a new Dr. Seuss adaptation called *Oh, The Places You’ll Go!*, alongside Josh Gad. The film is expected in 2028, shortly after Erivo’s animated project, giving fans of both actresses exciting content to look forward to in the coming years.
Warner Bros. Animation is developing three movies based on the works of Dr. Seuss, including a film adaptation of *Oh, The Places You’ll Go!* and a new take on *The Cat in the Hat*, which will star Bill Hader. They’re also creating a spin-off focusing on *The Cat in the Hat*’s mischievous sidekicks, Thing One and Thing Two. These films will all exist within a connected universe called “The Seussiverse.” Beyond Dr. Seuss, the studio is also working on the DC project *Dynamic Duo*, an adaptation of Marissa Meyer’s *The Lunar Chronicles*, and the holiday comedy *Margie Claus*.
