Jared Padalecki’s Friday the 13th Finds New Life on Streaming 16 Years Later

Despite being considered one of the worst movies ever made, a film is surprisingly popular on a major streaming service. It was a big hit in theaters, and that success is still happening with streaming viewers.

According to Flix Patrol, the 2009 remake of *Friday the 13th* is now one of the ten most-watched movies on HBO Max. It entered the U.S. streaming charts on October 9th at number eight. While it’s gaining popularity, it still trails behind bigger hits like *28 Years Later* and *The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It*, which are popular worldwide.

It’s no surprise horror movies are popular again with Halloween approaching. Streaming services have released a lot of new scary films for October, including classics like *Friday the 13th*. The lineup also features favorites such as *Freddy vs. Jason*, *Beetlejuice*, and *Trick ‘r Treat*.

Marcus Nispel directed the 2009 *Friday the 13th*, written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, aiming to reimagine the classic horror series for modern audiences. Initially, the film was intended as a deeper exploration of Jason Voorhees’ backstory, but it ultimately became a complete restart of the franchise. The story begins by revisiting the infamous night of Pamela Voorhees’ killings at Camp Crystal Lake, then jumps forward in time to show Jason continuing his mother’s deadly legacy.

The movie follows a man searching for his sister, Whitney (played by Amanda Righetti), after she disappears with her friends on a trip to Crystal Lake. The cast also includes Danielle Panabaker, Travis Van Winkle, Aaron Yoo, Jonathan Sadowski, Julianna Guill, Ben Feldman, Willa Ford, America Olivo, Kyle Davis, Richard Burgi, and Derek Mears as Jason Voorhees.

Despite earning over $92 million at the box office from a $19 million budget, *Friday the 13th* wasn’t well-received by critics or general audiences. Rotten Tomatoes shows a 26% critic score and a 47% audience approval rating.

What’s Next for the Friday the 13th Franchise?

The *Friday the 13th* series is heading in a new direction with the upcoming *Crystal Lake* prequel. Created by Brad Caleb Kane, the show will feature Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees and will also include a young actor in a recurring role.

This isn’t surprising, given that *Crystal Lake* is predicted to focus heavily on Pamela’s individual story. The show will feature Sissy Spacek alongside Cardellini and Vinson, as well as William Catlett, Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins, Gwendolyn Sundstrom, Nick Cordileone, Danielle Kotch, Phoenix Parnevik, and Joy Suprano.

Friday the 13th (2009) is currently available for streaming on HBO Max.
