Doctor Who boss teases “very angry” new show “with a lot of twists”

Russell T Davies has given fans an insight into his new Channel 4 drama series Tip Toe.

The famous actor from *Doctor Who* is directing a new series featuring Alan Cumming and David Morrissey, and it’s filmed in and around Manchester’s Gay Village.

This five-episode series centers on Leo, played by Cumming, and Clive, played by Morrissey, who have been neighbors in Manchester for nearly 15 years.

Just when things should be calming down, the situation around them is actually becoming more stressful, according to the official description.

In this gripping suburban thriller, everyday disagreements escalate into a dangerous feud, turning neighbors into enemies and forcing us to question the security we take for granted. Hurtful words and extreme beliefs fuel the conflict, creating a tense and unsettling story.

At the Virgin Atlantic Attitude Awards, Davies described the series as a reflection of today’s world, noting its modern, humorous, and often indignant tone.

He started by saying the central point is that we’re facing a difficult situation. Alan’s character owns and operates a bar named Spit and Polish, located on Canal Street.

I haven’t experienced anything like this before. Being there, on the street, is a real eye-opener – it’s vibrant, raw, and surprisingly humorous. It really captures what life is like now, but in a unique and unexpected way, and I’m really looking forward to it.

He explained that he’d shared everything, holding nothing back. His primary concern is that we’re facing serious problems and a surge of hostility, particularly as the election approaches, with opponents actively working against us. He sees this as a critical moment requiring strong action.

As a fan, it really struck me when Davies said how exhausting it is to be gay these days. He explained it perfectly – it feels like you’re constantly ‘coming out,’ just by existing and being yourself. It’s not a one-time thing, but a daily effort, and sadly, he feels like that means facing attacks all the time.

Tip Toe is set to be released in 2026, with an exact release date yet to be announced.
