Why you won’t want to miss “irresistible” new British period drama The Forsytes

Period drama lovers are about to get a fantastic new show called *The Forsytes*, and it’s packed with familiar faces from *Doctor Who* and *Downton Abbey*.

The Forsytes is a TV series based on John Galsworthy’s novels, The Forsyte Saga. Set in late Victorian England, it tells the story of a family of stockbrokers and their ongoing conflicts for control and influence over several generations.

This six-episode drama starts airing on Channel 5 on October 20th and looks promising, as it was written by Debbie Horsfield, the screenwriter behind *Poldark*.

What to Read Next

The central conflict of the family drama revolves around cousins Soames Forsyte, played by Joshua Orpin (known from *Home and Away*), and Jolyon, played by Danny Griffin (from *Fate: The Winx Saga*).

The story centers around a conflict between two characters vying for control of the family business, while also exploring their work and personal relationships.

Actors Orpin and Griffin will be joined by Millie Gibson, who viewers may recognize from her work on *Coronation Street* and *Doctor Who*.

Okay, so the actress playing Soames’s wife, Irene Heron, is going blonde to copper for the role – pretty cool, right? And Eleanor Tomlinson, who I recognized from *The Couple Next Door*, is going to play Louisa Byrne, who’s Jo’s first love. I’m excited to see how she does!

Tuppence Middleton, known for her roles in *Sense8* and *Downton Abbey: A New Era*, joins the cast as Frances Forsyte. Stephen Moyer, from *True Blood*, plays Jolyon Forsyte Senior, and Jack Davenport (*The Assassin*) portrays James Forsyte.

Even before the first season has finished airing, *The Forsytes* has been renewed for a second season. Joining the cast are Richard Rankin (known for *Outlander*), Sarah Alexander (*Pennyworth*), and Nia Ashi (*Bob Marley: One Love*).

In June, 5’s Commissioning Editor of Drama, Paul Testar, announced that filming for the second series of *The Forsytes* has started, and we’re thrilled about it.

Because the first season is about to premiere, renewing the show for a second season proves how compelling the stories and characters are, and how much we believe viewers will love them.

“We look forward to sharing even more of this rich and compelling series.”

Damien Timmer, the founder and Chief Creative Officer of Mammoth Screen, hinted at even more compelling storylines and a larger cast for the upcoming season.

Timmer expressed excitement for the release of the first series of *The Forsytes*, and shared that production has already begun on a second series. He praised Debbie Horsfield’s writing and highlighted the show’s growing cast.

The Forsytes will premiere on 5 on 20 October at 9pm. Episodes will air weekly.
