Crass moment Chris Evans had Victoria Beckham stand on scales on live TV – as ‘Posh Spice’ speaks out about anorexia struggles

I still can’t believe they actually made Victoria Beckham step on a scale, right after she had Brooklyn! It was on live television, with an audience watching – it was just awful and so unnecessary. I felt so bad for her, it was a really humiliating moment.

A video from 1999 feels different now that Victoria has revealed in her new Netflix documentary that she’s struggled with an eating disorder throughout her time as a pop star.

In 1999, Victoria appeared on Chris Evans’ TFI Friday, looking thin despite her fashionable outfit of black trousers and a strappy top. Her future husband, David, watched from the audience.

The event, a rather insensitive ‘weigh-in,’ happened only two months after Brooklyn was born. Notably, legendary football manager Terry Venables, who previously coached Tottenham Hotspur and the England national team, was also present.

Evans greeted Victoria with a kiss on her hand and both cheeks. Turning to Sir David, he playfully reassured him, ‘It was just a quick kiss, David, nothing more.’

The interview took place shortly before David and Victoria Beckham’s wedding, and right after Manchester United won the Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup – a victory they celebrated with a huge party, according to Victoria.

Evans explained to the crowd that their baby, who he jokingly called ‘the world’s most famous,’ was napping downstairs. He also mentioned they had to lower the volume of the bands playing throughout the day so as not to wake the baby.

Oh my gosh, he actually *asked* her! I was practically screaming at the TV! Everyone wants to know, because Victoria looks absolutely incredible after having a baby, and he finally asked her how she got her figure back! It’s a miracle! I need to know her secrets immediately!

She explained that she hadn’t been exercising, admitting she was quite lazy and didn’t go to the gym.

Chris interjected: ‘Are you one of these sickening women that don’t have to do anything.’

Victoria said: ‘I don’t, I don’t… actually a lot of people say does David help you work out…’

Chris then asked: ‘Is your weight back to normal?’ and Victoria replied: ‘Yes, it is.’

Reaching under his desk for a set of scales, Chris then asked: ‘Can I check? Do you mind?

A laughing Victoria replied: ‘Oh no, you did this to Geri didn’t you! Geri was small.’

They helped her step onto the scales, and Chris announced her weight – eight stone – adding, ‘That’s not bad at all!’ The crowd cheered enthusiastically.

Victoria asked Chris to step on the scale, and he claimed he always weighed 12 stone 6 pounds. However, the scale actually showed 12 stone, so he playfully said he’d lost six pounds during the show.

It just broke my heart hearing Victoria talk about how amazing Sir David was as a dad to Brooklyn – especially knowing everything that’s going on with Brooklyn and his parents now. It’s so sad, honestly. He really was the perfect dad, and it’s just awful to think about the strain it’s all causing.

Victoria shared that they don’t have a nanny, explaining that her partner is fully involved in childcare. ‘He’s fantastic,’ she said, ‘he changes diapers, gives him baths, and does everything needed for the baby.’

The interview concluded with Victoria refusing Chris’s request for her to do the splits. He then asked if she shared David’s wish to have six children.

She replied: ‘Well, I’d like a few more but I don’t know about six.’

In her new Netflix documentary, Victoria, who was 25 at the time, recalled being weighed on live television.

People would playfully ask if I’d lost weight, commenting on my body. We’d laugh it off, but I was very young at the time, and those comments actually really bothered me.

Victoria’s struggles with body confidence started in her teens when she was accepted into the Laine Theatre school in Epsom, Surrey. Her parents supported her dream by taking out a new mortgage on their home in Goffs Oak, Hertfordshire, to cover the costs.

She explained that even though she worked very hard, she wasn’t the most talented dancer or singer. She also mentioned that she didn’t look like the other kids in her class.

She explained that she didn’t fit the typical mold of other girls, and that’s when people began to criticize how she looked and her weight.

I recall a teacher at my theatre school telling me that, if we didn’t look polished enough during a performance, they would discreetly bring us in through the back instead of having us make a grand entrance. Basically, if we weren’t considered visually appealing enough, we’d be brought in unnoticed.

Victoria’s mother, Jackie, also shared that someone told her daughter, “You’re overweight and will be placed in the back.”

She added: ‘It must have affected her, it’s a very silly thing to say to someone, “You’re fat”.’

The documentary captures Victoria as she prepares for her Paris Fashion Week show in September 2024, which was her most ambitious fashion event to date.

The weather had everyone worried—including her record label—as they feared they’d have to cancel everything.

The show follows the star’s life, charting her path from her days in the Spice Girls, through her time as a celebrity wife, and up to her current career as a fashion designer.

Victoria is always honest, and she often gets emotional – her voice trembles and she sometimes tears up – when discussing challenging moments from her past.

Amongst them was when her VB label was millions in the red and was on the verge of closure.

I’ve seen this happen so many times, and it’s heartbreaking. She started her venture back in 2008, but unfortunately, it consistently needed financial help from her husband, David. It really damaged her reputation, and honestly, people started making fun of the situation. It’s a tough lesson – relying too heavily on someone else can undermine your own success and credibility.

Victoria revealed for the first time how distressed she was by nearly losing her London company and the shame it brought her.

This business isn’t just my job, it’s a core part of who I am, but getting here hasn’t been easy. I nearly lost everything, and that was a really difficult period in my life, she explained.

I was so stressed about the company’s massive debt – we were losing tens of millions of dollars – that I would cry every morning before going to work. It felt like we were constantly battling a crisis.

I’m heading home to my husband, but also to my business partner, and I needed to discuss this with him. The fact that he had invested in the business made the whole situation really difficult – I truly disliked it.
